Belly Bloat or bloating is a condition in which the abdomen feels uncomfortably full and gaseous, and may also be visibly swollen (distended). Bloating is a common complaint among both adults and children.

Belly bloat could lead to flatulence, which is a medical term for releasing gas from the digestive system through the anus. It is also commonly known as farting, passing wind, or having gas. It occurs when gas collects inside the digestive system.

Belly bloat is so discomforting that you would do anything to eliminate it. But have you ever thought of what could be causing it? Here are 10 everyday habits that could be causing your belly bloat.

1. Chewing Gum: Surprised? You swallowed air when you chew gum and this leads to bloat and discomfort.

2. Not Drinking Enough Water: Water does not only quench your thirst when you are thirsty, but it also plays an essential role in moving foods along in our system. When you don’t drink enough, your body actual retains fluids and causes bloat.

3. Eat Gassy Fruits And Vegetables: Some vegetables like cabbage are so gassy that they make your belly bloat. Fruits like grapes and melon also bring on gas, but they also provide multiple benefits.You shouldn’t completely skip these foods but try not to eat too many different kinds at once.

4. Eating Too Fast: Eating your food too fast can cause air to get trapped in your tummy, which brings on bloat. Take your time to bite, chew, and enjoy the taste, texture and temperature of your food. This kind of mindful eating might even help you loose little weight because when you savor every bite, you may need less to eat.

5. Eating Artificial Sweetener: Certain sweeteners and foods that contain sugar alcohols can cause gas, bloat, and in some cases, diarrhea. So before consuming that food read the labels to see if it contains sugar alcohols. Look for words that end in the letters “-ol” such as sorbitol, mannitol and xylitol – common ingredients in diet products, gums, and energy bars.

6. Drinking Through A Straw: This is another reason your belly could be bloated. This is like blowing air into a balloon. Look at it this way, every time you suck your beverage through a straw, you are pumping air into your gut. The process is made even worse when you drink carbonated beverages. Forget about the straw and simply sip your drink slowly from a glass or a bottle.

7. Eating Salty Foods: Salt acts like a magnet to water so go easy on foods that are naturally high in salt. Read labels of highly processed foods to check sodium content. Keep in mind that one teaspoon of salt has about 2,300 mg. of sodium. Do you still salt food before you taste it? It is time you stopped the habit.

8. Over Consumption Of Fiber: Eat fiber slowly and in smaller quantity to reap its benefits without the bloat.

9. Eating A Lot Of Frozen Yogurt: Although yogurt is low in calories in a small serving, some people consume a bowl full and when yogurt spins around in that soft-serve machine air gets incorporated into it and you can only imagine what happens when you consume it in excess.

10. Not Moving After Eating: When you sit a point without moving after you have had your meal, you are actually being counterproductive because you are slowing down the digestion process. Get up and move after eating a meal or snack even if it’s just walking around your office.
