When it comes to money, all we know is how to spend it – oops. So, we know, first hand, the struggle of saving.
The idea of saving money is much more romantic than actually doing it; it requires real discipline and foresight and often – gulp! – passing on that gorgeous pair of mules you just spotted in the shop window.
But! We’ve put together some small ways that you can stop living from month-to-month and instead save in small ways and still be able to afford those shoes-every now and then, that is.
Here are 4 small tips to help you save big for the future you want, and most certainly will need:
1 START SMALL
At least 10% of your salary needs to be put away in a long-term fund of some sort-whether it’s a unit trust account or a monthly-savings debit order. Do it, you’ll appreciate it later.
2 GET RID OF DEBT
Today we are living in a world of instant gratification and keeping up with the Jones’ (side note: could the Kardashian’s be the new Jones’?) where many are applying for a second home loan or credit card simply to pay off the first. Instead, why not combine last year’s debt now, by cutting up those store and credit cards (Remember how we talked about sometimes giving those shoes a miss?) and set a date by which to pay off that debt.
3 GET MONEY BACK
Lots of medical aid schemes like Discovery Vitality offer a Health Food programme, where you can get cash back on healthy food purchases at grocery stores such as Woolworth and Pick ‘n Pay.
4 TURN YOUR POINTS INTO CASH
Post festive season leaves majority of people’s finances rather depleted, if you’re a Nedbank Greenbacks member you can convert your Greenbacks into cash; speak to your bank or financial advisor about what your bank can offer you and how it works! You can then use this extra cash to either: save some more, pay for gas or buy yourself some post festive season pick me up shoes!
