6 Food You Should Be Eating To Boost Your Immune System

Feeding the body with some foods will keep your body and immune system strong – the body will be resistant to some diseases (of course not all). There are also foods out there that are capable of healing flu or a mild form of cold. It is not difficult- when keeping the body healthy becomes a top priority, going to the grocery should not be a big deal.

1. Citrus Fruits
Many people find themselves in the succor of Vitamin C especially the whites when they catch a cold. This is because it helps to build up the immune system. Vitamin C is believed to increase the number of white blood cells. Daily Vitamin C is essential for good health. It is easy to add a squeeze of this Vitamin to any meal plan. Citrus is the key to fighting infections and diseases. Examples of citrus fruits include grapefruit, oranges, tangerines, lemons, limes.

2. Red Bell peppers
Commonly known to Nigerians as tatase, gram red bell peppers contain two times vitamin C as citrus. They are also a rich source of beta carotene. Besides improving the immune system, vitamin C helps to maintain healthy skin. Beta carotene is good for the eyes and skin also.

3. Garlic
Garlic is used in almost every part of the world. It adds a little zest to foods. It is a must-have for the health. Early civilizations around the globe especially in Egypt and Greece discovered its use in fighting infections. Garlic also helps to lower blood pressure and halts hardening of the arteries. Garlic’s immune-boosting properties are evident in sulphur-containing compounds such as allicin.

4. Yoghurt
Active cultures in some yogurts stimulate the immune system to help fight diseases. Once in a while, it is okay to get plain yoghurts rather than the ones flavoured with sugar. One can sweeten plain yoghurts with healthy fruits instead. Yoghurt is a great source of Vitamin D. So, when picking yoghurts, it is advisable to get for the ones fortified with Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system and boosts the body’s natural defenses against diseases.

5. Green Tea
Green tea is fast becoming a Nigerian family’s top consumption at breakfast. Both green and black teas are stuffed with flavonoids, a type of antioxidant. Green tea contains epigallocatechin gallate or EGCG, a powerful antioxidant. It enhances immune function.

6. Pawpaw
Papaya is another fruit loaded with Vitamin C. Do you know one can find 224% of the daily recommended amount of vitamin C in a single papaya? Pawpaw has a digestive enzyme called papain that has anti-inflammatory qualities. Pawpaw also has a little amount of potassium, B vitamins and folate. All these mentioned are important to health.

Top 7 Best Private And Government Hospitals in Nigeria

You will definitely agree with me that the Nigeria health sector has been seriously dilapidated and this has really debilitated the well-being of average Nigeria.

Though our government are really trying to mitigate this national eyesore, through the infrastructural development in the health sector, both at state and federal level.

However, if you visit the hospital on a daily basis, you would notice the crowd of patients, trooping in with one or more health issues. Some are indoor nursing their illness due to probably poverty because it is a major concern in this context.

The bottom line is the health sector are being recuperated but large number of Nigerians are sick, why?

This is because the pathogens, disease causing organisms, are still lingering joyously in our environment; our environment is squalid, unkempt but the health centers are upgraded. It is a one sided development and to eradicate diseases, it requires a two-sided development- the health sector and the environment. This is because people live in the environment and not the health centers.

Nigeria is one of the countries with the most sophisticated hospitals of international standard, this is laudable effort by our government to ensure we are all safe and free from any disease infection.

There are primary health centers to cater for the health needs of small hamlets or town and also the general hospital; where the primary health centers refer to in case of any critical condition. The general hospital is a specialized hospital with modern health facilities to save life and restore hope.

Not all cases are referred to the general hospital, the primary health centers are designated to attend to casual or less important health issues. The function of the general hospital is to tackle critical health issues that can claim the life of the victim. So often times, the general hospitals are more equipped and sophisticated than the primary health centers; the primary health centers on the other hand are more than the general hospital in population. Both health institutions work hand-in-hand to save life of the populace.

The increasing population of Nigeria has warranted increase in the number of health institutions but the inability of the government to provide surplus health institution has necessitated the need for private hospitals. Private hospitals are own solely by individuals and have two objectives.

One is common to the government hospital with is providing adequate health facilities to save life and the other is to make profit. This is where most people have issues with the private hospitals as one has to pay through the nose to get adequate medical care. Dangerous Infections You Can Get When You Bite Your Nails

Biting your nails might seem like a minor bad habit. The frequency of the habit might lead you to believe that it’s no big deal. However, it might surprise you to know that there are some truly nasty (and dangerous) infections that can result from biting your nails.

Here are five common infections that are even riskier for nail-biting:

1. Staphylococcus aureus
You might have heard of staphylococcus bacteria before. Medical professionals often refer to it as a staph infection – and it’s not a joke.

Staphylococcus aureus is a type of bacteria frequently found in the nails of nail -biters, according to BetterHealth Untreated, this bacteria can do all these things:

Cause the growth of boils or abscesses on the skin

  • Causes respiratory infections
  • Cause symptoms like those of food poisoning (in fact, it’s a common culprit in food poisoning, according to the CDC)

One of the most problematic facts about staphylococcus aureus is that there are antibiotic-resistant strains of it, including methicillin-resistant s. aureus which can be fatal.

2. Escherichia coli
More commonly known as E. coli, this nasty bacterium is one that’s often implicated in outbreaks of illness across the United States. It’s commonly found in the lower intestines and is present in feces according to WebMD. Many of the E. coli contaminations come from not washing your hands.

Even if you wash your hands carefully after you use the bathroom, you can still end up with E. coli underneath your nails. If you then put your fingers in your mouth to finish off that hangnail, you run the risk of moving the bacteria into your body.

One strain of E. coli, known as enterohemorrhagic E. coli, can be life-threatening.

3. Herpetic whitlow
Herpetic whitlow is caused by the same herpes simplex virus (HSV) that causes cold sores (Approximately 40% of all adults have oral herpes and carry the herpes virus). If you stick your fingers in your mouth, you risk transmitting the virus to your fingers. Once it’s there, it can cause:

Swelling and redness of the fingers

  • Lesions on the fingers and around the nail bed
  • Fever
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Herpes isn’t life-threatening, but it’s highly contagious. If you have herpes whitlow, then you run the risk of passing it to people easier than you could if it were confined to your mouth. And once you have herpes whitlow, it’s likely to occur for the rest of your life – just as oral herpes and genital herpes do.

4. Candida Parapsilosis
Candida bacteria are more commonly known as yeast bacteria. These bacteria are often found on human hands and under fingernails, and can cause infections in almost every part of the body, according to Medica News Today.

Transferring candida parapsilosis from the hands to the mouth can lead to candida infections in the mouth, digestive tract, and stomach. In some cases, systemic infection may result, affecting the heart, brain, bones, eyes, and other parts of the body.

Systemic candidiasis can be fatal if not properly treated. Often, patients may need a prolonged course of antifungal medication to treat their condition. Surgical nail removal might also be necessary.

5. Salmonellosis
Salmonella bacteria is frequently implicated in cases of food poisoning. It’s caused by salmonella enterica, a bacterium that grows in food. Infections with salmonella are more common during the summer months as salmonella needs a warm environment to grow, as outlined by WebMD.

People who handle food without washing their hands, or those who don’t wash their hands when they clean up after a pet, are likely to have salmonella on their hands and under their nails. If you transfer salmonella bacteria to your mouth, you can expect symptoms to start within 12 to 72 hours after infection. The symptoms include:

Abdominal cramps
For most people, salmonellosis is not fatal. However, pregnant women and individuals with compromised immune systems may be at a risk of serious illness or death. Dehydration is also a significant risk with salmonellosis.

The best way to avoid transmitting germs from your hands to your mouth is to stop biting your nails. Washing your hands with soap and hot water for at least fifteen seconds after handling food, using the bathroom, or cleaning up after your pets also helps, but ultimately, you can lower your own risk by stopping this bad habit.
