Award-winning Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie stays winning as the state of Maryland, US, has voted her first novel, Purple Hibiscus, their 2017 One Maryland One Book.
Maryland Humanities reported that the novel was chosen from more than 120 titles suggested by readers across the state.
According to them, Purple Hibiscus resonates with this year’s theme, “Home and Belonging.”
Now in its tenth year, the purpose of the One Maryland One Book program is to bring different people across the state together through the shared experience of reading the same book.
The novel was chosen by a committee of librarians, educators, authors, and bibliophiles.
Reacting to the news, Chimamanda said,
I’m pleased and honored that Purple Hibiscus will be read by many people in the state I call my American home. Literature should ‘instruct and delight’ and I truly hope Marylanders will enjoy reading it.
