Etisalat has reportedly challenged MTN Nigeria over the later’s acquisition of Visafone’s 800 MHz spectrum.
According to BiztechAfrica, Etisalat claims the action is necessary to prevent the use of the spectrum, which will no doubt seal MTN’s dominance in the retail data services market.
“We have in addition and in line with Section 86 of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003 engaged the NCC to understand the basis of its decision to approve the acquisition”, said Etisalat.
With over 62 million subscribers as at September last year, MTN currently owns over 43% of the telecoms market.
This is not the first time Etisalat has attempted to take legal action against MTN’s dominance in Nigeria. Back in July of 2015, the telco sued MTN over alleged unethical practices it claimed was stifling healthy competition.
