How To Extend Your Smartphone’s Battery Life

As you well know, Smartphones are mobile electronic devices that combine data, telephony and computing capabilities in a compact unit. These devices come with mobile operating systems that enable them to handle lots of multitasking activities simultaneously as well as process large files and data on the go. Their multifunctional and diverse range of capabilities make smartphones power hungry devices and most can barely last a day on a full charge if their functionalities are fully exploited.

Battery drain has been one of the most daunting challenges Smartphone owners face these days. Most reputable Smartphone manufacturers have released several models of their brands with supposed “improved battery life.” However, these battery conserving smartphones only end up extending your battery life a few hours, which isn’t enough to justify the heavy price tag they carry. Gone are the days when we had mobile phones lasting three good days on full charge. Now is the Smartphone era and the persistent battery drain problems plaguing these devices isn’t going away anytime soon. Nevertheless, these are few tips you can use to extend your Smartphone’s battery life.

1. Reduce your Smartphone’s screen brightness

One of the biggest culprits when it comes to your Smartphone’s battery drain is its display. When you launch your Smartphone’s power management app, you’d see that the screen is the biggest contributor to battery drain, miles ahead of other battery draining functionalities. Many Smartphone owners enjoy watching their favorite movies or surfing the web at the highest level of screen brightness, but they tend to forget that the brightness of their smartphone’s display has a positive relationship with battery drain. It’s advisable to leave your Smartphone’s brightness level to the lowest when indoors and medium level when outdoors.

2. Manage your Screen Timeout

Screen timeout, on the other hand, indicates how long the Smartphone’s display background light stays on after your last touch. Although some smartphones come with intelligent features that track the eye direction of their users and then take appropriate action to turn off the background light when these users aren’t looking at the screen, not every Smartphone, possess such capabilities. If your Smartphone lacks the “Smart Stay feature”, you can go to your display settings to reduce your Smartphone’s display timeout to two or three seconds, so after every two or three seconds of your last touch, the background light in your Smartphone’s display turns off. Managing your Smartphone’s background light timeout effectively will significantly help you conserve your Smartphone’s battery juice.

3. Turn off Vibrations When not needed

The smartphone vibration feature is great if used right. However, they take a heavy toll on your Smartphone’s battery life if left unattended to for a long period of time. Simple, short-time vibrations deplete your Smartphone’s battery more than ringtones, but they are more appropriate for places of worship, office meetings, lecture halls, etc. Try to deactivate them when not needed. But we all know that it can be a daunting task switching between vibration and ringing profiles all the time. But then, when it comes to conserving your battery juice, you’ve got no choice than to get accustomed to your new habit.

4. Deactivate GPS when not needed

The Global Positioning System (GPS) is primarily a satellite navigation service that enables users to track their locations remotely where ever they may be on our planet. Lots of apps on our smartphones make use of the GPS functionality in tracking our locations or positions, and they transmit the data gotten to third party app developers for targeted marketing or other types of advertisement. Leaving your GPS constantly on takes a negative toll on your Smartphone’s battery, because there is always a constant exchange of data between your Smartphone and the satellites in orbit. Keep your GPS turned off when not in use and also set restrictions on apps that always try to access this service. That way, there will be fewer burdens on your Smartphone’s battery.

5. Keep a watchful eye on your Smartphone’s connectivity

Smartphones are usually equipped with a plethora of network connections from Bluetooth, WiFi, and NFC to 3.5G, 3.75 and LTE; we are virtually spoilt for choice when it comes to connectivity. However, your choice of network connection plays a significant role in your Smartphone’s battery life. Networks such as 3.75G and LTE, although extremely fast, take a large chunk off your Smartphone’s battery life. You’ll notice that anytime you are making use of 3.75 G and LTE, your Smartphone tends to heat up, leading to excessive battery drain. You mustn’t always keep your Smartphone’s 3.75 G or LTE (4G) network active when you don’t require extremely fast internet service. You can always switch to Edge or 3G when not actively engaged in data-consuming activities. This will help your Smartphone’s battery stay longer at full charge as well as serve your better.

In conclusion, the tips mentioned above are some of the best ways to conserve and lengthen your Smartphone’s battery life and performance. However, they aren’t only restricted to the ones given above. Simple tips like switching off your Smartphone when not in use or charging its battery appropriately can go a long way in extending its service life and overall performance. To effectively extend your Smartphone battery life, you’ll need to adjust your digital activities and habits. That way, you’ll be able to maximize your Smartphone’s battery performance by prorating its usefulness throughout the day and not just a few hours.
