Tope Alabi with her special recognition award in New York
‘I, New York State Senator Ruben Diaz, recognise that in Tope Alabi we have an individual worthy of our highest respect and esteem; and be it further. It is fit and proper to recognise the achievements of individuals who substantially contribute to the vitality of their communities and the entire Empire State’.
These were the words of Rubén Díaz, a United States politician and an ordained pastor who represents the 32nd District in the New York State Senate.
He made the statement on October 9, 2016 at the COGA Rehoboth Convention, New York where he presented a special recognition award to Nigerian gospel singer, Tope Alabi for her dedication to the betterment of her community.
This won’t be the first time a Nigerian celeb is getting this kind of honour in the US.
In 2015, days after the US Congress made a proclamation acknowledging the legendary status of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, a similar honour was extended to Nigerian comedianBasketmouth when Annice D. Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston, declared July 17 asBasketmouth Day in honour of the highly rated comedian.
