We all have different personalities and different ways of showing our emotions. The ability to tap into our emotions and use them to improve our lives is called emotional intelligence. Emotional Intelligence is an awareness of your actions and feelings and how they affect people around you. It also means that you are aware of your actions, value and empathize with others on many different levels.

Emotional intelligence represents an ability to validly reason with emotions and to use emotions to enhance thought. It is also, the ability to express and control our emotions and the ability to understand, interpret, and respond to the emotions of others. This allows us to manage relationships competently and achieve our goals.

People with high Emotional Intelligence usually go through life much more easily. No matter what kind of situation they find themselves, they always seem to know how to get around it. This is because they are very good at managing their emotions and have the ability to always see a solution whenever there is a problem. They know how to handle criticism and ultimately use it to improve their performance. They are good listeners and often put the feelings of others ahead of their own.
Emotional Intelligence can be developed or strengthened by using the following techniques;

1. Reduce Negative Emotions – When you feel adversely about someone’s behavior, avoid jumping to a negative conclusion right away. Instead, come up with multiple ways of viewing the situation before reacting. Broadening your perception can reduce the possibility of misunderstanding.

2. Be Proactive in the face of difficulty – When you are faced with a challenge, take a deep breath and slowly figure a better way of handling the situation. This helps you to reduce, instead of complicating the issue.

3. Evaluate yourself – Accept that you are not perfect and constantly work on the areas where you are observe weaknesses. Having the courage to objectively examine yourself honestly can help strengthen you emotionally.

4. Learn to handle Pressure – When under pressure, the most important thing to remember is to keep your cool. Having the ability to be calm and stay in control when you are under immense pressure is invaluable. Always learn to keep your emotions under check when things don’t happen the way you envisage.

5. Observe the effect you have on others – You need to understand the effect you are having on other people. Do people tend to feel nervous, cheerful or people tend to close up a bit when you come around? You may find it challenging identifying the effect you have on others, ask your trusted friends or loved ones. You might need to change your attitude so that you can have a better emotional effect on them.

6. Be Assertive and express yourself when necessary – Talk openly about the things that are important to you and take a clear position on where you stand on any issue. That ability to clarify the limits of what is acceptable and tolerable to us in a relationship increases our emotional intelligence.

7. Learn to manage stress – If you often feel overwhelmed by a variety of different emotions, it’s difficult to relate with others in the best possible way. Identify what triggers your stress, and what helps relieve it. Learning to manage your stress helps your relationship with others greatly.

8. Stop blaming others when things go wrong and learn to take responsibility for your actions.

9. Be sensitive – Always look at how you perceive and interact with others. Perceive them accurately and try to understand nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions. Often people say one thing but the look on their face reveals the deeper truth. Be more attentive and pick up on the less obvious ways that people communicate their emotions.

10. Improve your empathy skills – Listen actively and pay attention to what others are saying. Learn to put yourself in their place and be more open and accepting of their perspectives and needs. It can help you get a better sense of how and what they are feeling. This knowledge informs your decisions and improve your relationships.
