Synopsis:

Born Raoul John Njeng-Njeng in Kaduna, Kaduna State on April 1, 1991, Skales whose stage name is an acronym for Seek Knowledge Acquire Large Entrepreneural Skills, is a popular Nigerian music artist and songwriter. The only child of his parents, he grew up to like music as he always tended to his mother’s cassete shop. Skales did not have it smooth while growing up as he was raised by his single mother whose sustenance was a petty trade. He also entered into music contests and won. In 2008, while in Jos, Skales worked with Jesse Jags and Jeremiah Giang, already established music artistes based in Jos. It was ‘Must Shine’, his debut single, that made him popular. It was widely listened to and played on airplays in Lagos and Abuja. Later he signed a deal with Banky W’s Empire Mates Entertainment (EME) under which he released ‘Mukulu’. Since then, he has recorded several other songs. He has also featured many other popular artistes in his songs. However, Skales experienced misfortune in 2011 when he was involved in a motor accident, which left one person dead, and three others injured.

Controversies:

Skales is one of the most controversial artistes in the Nigerian music industry. In a random tweet in December 2013, he revealed his dislike for girls with big boobs. He however, sounded controversial when he also tweeted: ‘Thick girls rule’. At some point, the Kaduna born artiste was also said to have secretly dated the popular actress, Funke Akindele. Also, a war of words transpired between Skales and Wizkid. Skales claimed to have written ‘Azonto’ for Wizkid, a song that went viral. Wizkid’s response to the allegation was harsh. He said that the former EME artiste was only looking for cheap popularity to promote his yet to be released work.
