Why Nigerian Youths Should Be Self-Reliant Via Agriculture -Ajimobi

Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, has asked youths, especially those who have technical training to see themselves as agents of change and self-reliance necessary for Nigeria to regain its economic balance.

Governor Ajimobi, who was represented by the Commissioner for Education, Professor Adeniyi Olowofela, made the call at the first convocation ceremony of the College of Agriculture in Igbo Ora, Oyo State in southwest Nigeria.

He stressed the urgent need to replace ageing farming population with trained vibrant youths across the country.

At the event, the Provost of the college, Professor Gbemiga Adewale, said the institution has provided the pedestal on which the new agriculture policy of the Oyo State government would flourish.

He added that though the new Federal Government policy on agriculture is unclear, emphasis must be on improved research enhanced productivity, as against regular farming production that Nigerian farmers have been used to.

Professor Adewale highlighted the encouraging signals among the youth on recent engagement in the agricultural sector.

He also urged the government at all levels to support the practice of modern agriculture.

The Provost stated that with the current pace of partnership between the institution and the government in the area of capacity building and support services, the state was well positioned on the path to economic recovery.

He maintained that the youths must be seriously involved in the new agriculture policy of the Federal Government to achieve success.

A total of six sets of graduates were celebrated at the convocation ceremony of the 10-year-old institution.
