What is it that makes a convincing anime hero, anyway? Their backstory, their motivation, their final form? When it comes down to it, audiences are compelled by protagonists who exude charisma and power – the kind of guys who’d be there for you in a pinch, but you wouldn’t want to be around once they got angry.
Throughout the years, we’ve witnessed anime characters that have far surpassed power levels of over 9,000, whether it be by ki energy, an intangible mystical force, or through their skills with a sword. This truth alone allows it to be highly difficult to measure a character’s power versus another, however the following characters listed are the ones we’ve seen demonstrate the highest levels of capability.
We’ll be taking into account strength feats each character has accomplished in their respective animes and not their mangas. So without further ado, let’s take a look at the most powerful heroes in anime. You won’t need your scouters for this list.
Being born the “Prince of all Saiyans” has destined this hot-headed warrior for some next level stuff.
Being born of the indigenous alien race has allowed Vegeta to surpass the levels of ordinary humans. He also possesses the innate ability to become naturally stronger after falling in combat, along with any of those that share his bloodline. Perhaps the only thing that matches the warrior’s tenacity is his over the top ego, however this trait is also responsible for leading him to where he is today.
14. Kenshin Himura
Despite casting away his manslayer title, Kenshin’s swordsmanship is rivaled by nearly no one, and that’s saying a lot for a man that carries a reverse blade sword.
Kenshin’s skills as an assassin coupled with his Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū sword style has made his name somewhat mythical. His speed and precision are unmatched, and most of his movements are difficult to decipher with the human eye. It’s almost shuddering to think what the swordsman could accomplish if moved back to his former ways, for even with his handicap he’s yet to be rivaled.
There are men that fear demons, and then there are the men that those demons fear. Meet Guts, a spry mercenary leader that brandishes a steel sword nearly the size of his body.
Born and hardened into a war torn era has made this swordsman a man amongst men and commonly considered the strongest of his kind. On the battlefield Guts displays a level of fighting skill unseen by mere mortals, and at one time became infamous for disposing of an army of 100 men all by himself. The later version of the character would see him with an even bigger sword and a cannon arm- like he needed to look anymore badass.
In an age where the law has failed the innocent, this martial artist serves up some cold hard justice… with his fist, of course. Kenshiro has mastered the ancient Hokuto Shinken style, a Chinese assassination martial art that grants him in insane amount of fortitude.
The art itself consist of movements that triggers an opponents pressure points, making them likely to explode on impact. Kenshiro is also able to harness full control of his ki energy, bringing him to superhuman levels of strength and speed, allowing him use of projection techniques.
11. Levi Ackerman
While he may not be the main hero in his respective anime series, there’s no denying that he plays out to be the people’s champ in the battle against the Titans. The leading soldier in the Survey Corps is highly revered as the world’s strongest soldier, and possibly the strongest human alive.
With the aptitude to take on a legion of Titans on his own with nothing but his 3D maneuver gear, exemplifies an unreal amount of speed and strength. It is also very possible we’ve yet to see the captain reach his absolute limits, as he’s managed to keep his unflinching facial expression even in the midst of the most high stakes situations.
10. Edward Elric
Amongst tragedy comes triumph, and let’s just say this highly skilled alchemist has suffered through a lot. Along with his brother, Edward has inherited the natural talent for alchemy at a very young age making him bound for greatness years to come.
Apart from being a highly trained martial artist, Edward’s steel right arm and left leg has amplified his natural ability. Due to his exposure to “The Truth,” the young prodigy is also one of the only alchemists in the world that can use the skill without a transmutation circle, allowing him lightning fast reaction time on the battlefield. Along with his surroundings, Edward can make his own body into a lethal weapon, making his imagination his only limiting factor.
9. Jotaro Kujo
Here’s a character you might define as the strong and silent type; emphasis on the strong. Jotaro is a Stand user, giving him the dominance over a supernatural persona to help fight alongside him.
Jotaro’s Stand, Star Platinum, boosts his combat capability to incredible levels, as it possesses super strength, speed, durability, and accuracy. Being a close-ranged Stand makes a fist fight with the Star Platinum an almost guaranteed suicide attempt. It also reserves the ability to transform into an evolved version gifted with the ability to stop time.
Protecting the Human World from the nefarious forces of the Spirit Realm requires a specific set of skills found with this Spirit Detective.
After dying and being brought back to life, Yusuke retained the ability to use his spirit energy to not only amplify his physical ability, but summon up some devastating moves. Of these the most iconic would be his Spirit Gun technique, where he emits a huge pellet of energy from his fingers. Towards the end of his anime series, it was also revealed that the character was half demon, giving him access to a Raizen-inspired demon form.
7. Saitama OnePunch-Man
Some heroes wear capes. Some heroes punch really hard. This hero has been seen to do both. Saitama is commonly referred to as the most powerful superhero in the world, as none of his adversaries have survived past a single punch from him.
The character has supposedly trained himself to this surreal level of strength and has now found himself in an existential crisis. Unable to acquire an opponent that pushes him to his absolute boundaries (or even close), it is quite possible we’ve yet to even see this superhuman scratch the surface of his true power.
6. Natsu Dragneel
Want to see a magic trick? The talented Mage of the Fairy Tail Guild might be able to teach you a thing or two.
Natsu’s natural ability with Dragon Slayer Magic is nothing short of astounding and makes him a nearly impossible offensive force. Being a fire user allows Natsu to be impervious to the element, as well as reserve the ability to absorb it in order to replenish his energy.
It would also be unwise to underestimate this mage as a hand to hand combatant, as along with being in peak physical condition, Natsu is likely to combine his Dragon Slayer Magic to enhance his blows.
5. Monkey D. Luffy
You don’t set out to become the Pirate King without showing everyone you’re the biggest and baddest one of them all. Don’t be fooled by this character’s cheerful appearance as you’re most likely not going to recognize him once he’s entered his combat stance.
Upon eating the Gum-Gum Fruit, Luffy has been bestowed with the ability of becoming infinitely stretchy, which he uses to his full advantage on the battlefield. The Straw Hat Pirate’s total body strength is only matched by his unfailing determination, as this is likely to increase when he activates his second or third gear.
4. Ichigo Kurosaki
For a “Substitute Shinigami” this anime character has made quite the impression on the living and spirit world.
Ichigo has always been quite adept with his spiritual energy, however after becoming a Shinigami his powers are boosted beyond what was expected. Mastering his Bankai skill in record time has allowed Ichigo to be ranked quite high within Soul Society, and upon earning control of his Hollowification and later his Fullbring mode, he has become one of the most powerful beings in his respective world.
Might as well do away with your wooden stakes and silver bullets, because there’ll simply be no taking down this immortal vampire.
Alucard is an omnipotent entity within his series and has been employed by the Hellsing family to do away with the undead creatures that have made their way into the world of the living. The vampire is extremely cocky and arrogant, as he’s yet to face an opponent that could kill him indefinitely.
While possessing inhumane strength and speed, Alucard’s power is likely to increase if an adversary begins to peak his interest. Being alive for hundreds of years without a worthwhile battle has only made the Night Walker more vicious and bloodthirsty, rendering him not only one of the powerful characters in anime, but most terrifying.
2. Naruto Uzumaki
Everyone loves a good underdog story, making following this ninja’s rise to greatness all the more fun to observe. If there’s anything Naruto has taught us, it’s to never underestimate the late bloomer, for they may possess the power of the Nine-Tails, or- something of that nature.
Naruto’s distinguished bloodline has gained him access to this elite level of strength, giving him arsenal of new forms and modes throughout his series. At this stage in the game, the Seventh Hokage ninja has unlocked the full Nine-Tails Beast Mode. Among this skill, Naruto excels at Ninjutsu skills such as his Shadow Clone Jutsu, or his infamous Rasengan.
Did you honestly expect anyone else to be in this spot? This Saiyan warrior epitomizes power and strength, and has set a standard for all anime characters that have come after him.
Being of the Saiyan race, Goku has access to nearly unlimited levels of strength and possesses the power to ascend to Super. He currently has achieved the title of Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan which would honestly be a headache to accurately measure.
While most anime series have displayed abilities that have perhaps moved mountains or wrecked cities, Goku has taken on threats that have threatened the destruction of planets. Even in times where he may have lost, his perseverance and ability to surpass his unforeseen limits have made him our indisputable hero.
