2019 has been a very interesting year so far for the Nigerian music industry. This is the period that saw the most dramatic rise for hitherto unknown and unpopular music acts.
For instance, Fireboy and Rema, both relatively new acts, had competed for the No 1 spot on the Nigerian music charts for the past few weeks. This year is notable for the amount of breakthrough acts as well as for the hits from already established acts, with both Zlatan and Naira Marley capitalizing on the much loved Zanku dance and sound to carve out back to back street hits for themselves.
T Classic – Nobody Fine Pass You
With ‘nobody Fine Pass You’ T-Classic moved from relative unknown to certified star. With a style and sound that bears some similarity to Kiss Daniel’s, the star was a able to craft an infectious joint that Nigerian music lovers can’t help but fall in love with.
With over 1.6 million views on YouTube, there is no doubt that Nigerians have caught the T-Classic bug.
Burna Boy – Killing Dem ft. Zlatan
Building on a fantastic 2018 year with the success of his ‘Outside’ album, the ‘ye’ crooner returned to form this year with a string of hits amongst which is the Zlatan assisted ‘killin dem’.
A slight departure from his trademark smooth Afro-beat vibe, this song plugs into the Zanku sound superbly, and in the Zanku pioneer, Zlatan, he got the perfect collaborator. You can not just but do the Zanku moves when ‘killin dem’ comes on.
Larry Gaaga – Low ft. Wizkid
One of the top Nigerian music mogul Larry Gaaga did well on this one when he pulled in Wizkid for a sensational tune ‘Low’.
It is actually amazing that Wizkid has not released any official single in 2019 at the time of writing article.
‘Low’ was just the right tune for millions of the Starboy fans. The song has over 7+ million views at the time of composing this
Rema – Dumebi
Mavin Records / Jonzing World artiste Rema, came into the music industry with a bang. Signed in March, Rema begin his career by dropping an incredibly well received four track EP. All pretty much every song on there was dope, the love cut, Dumebi quickly became a favorite among music fans who were enthralled by the freshness of Rema’s sound. Dumebi became an instant hit and quickly shot Rema into stardom, even earning the young artiste comparisons with a legend like Wizkid.
Fireboy DML – Jealous
In 2018, YBNL boss, Olamide signed Fireboy DML to his music imprint as the start of new things for the next rated singer.
He was part of the artiste on the ‘YBNL Mafia Family’ album and his song ‘Jealous’ made the cut.
Although released in 2018, the tune gained orgasmic traction in 2019 as ‘Jealous’ became a huge tune on radio and TV. The song has spent a number of days atop the Nigerian Music charts.
Olamide- Oil and Gas
Olamide is the king of hits, and the rapper cum singer did not let down with another banger, ‘oil and Gas’. Very street and infectious, Oil and Gas has taken over the airwaves and speakers.
Kizz Daniel – Madu
Fly Boy Inc. boss, Kizz Daniel, has been very consistent over the past few years and in 2019 he has maintained the momentum.
He dropped his much talked about ‘No Bad Songz’ album last year.
A standout single on that album is ‘Madu’.
The tune piqued the attention of music lovers this year shortly after the release of the sensual music video which starred Beverly Osu.
Naira Marley – Am I A Yahoo Boy ft. Zlatan
Born Azeez Fashola, Naira Marley made news headlines over his outright support for cyber crimes AKA ‘yahoo yahoo’.
Keeping up the flow, the musician released a song ‘Am I A Yahoo Boy’ featuring his buddy Zlatan.
The ‘Issa Goal’ singer was later arrested days after by the EFCC which made the track even more popular and in demand.
2Baba – Oyi
Well known legendary Nigerian singer 2Baba who is celebrating 20 years in the music industry has continued to display his frankly superhuman staying power with another hit released January.
‘Oyi” was laid out his song in the usual pidgin English and his native Idoma dialect and was immensely successful, topping music and video charts across the country for weeks.
Patoranking – Confirm ft. Davido
Patoranking enlisted Davido for ‘confirm’ and it turned out to be a smash hit, as both artistes brought their very best to the infectious joint.
Confirm was the lead single off Patoranking’s latest ‘Wilmer’ album, and it was easily recognised as the best off the project.
