7 Attitudes For Effective Managerial Performance

A manager that wants to exhibit positive behaviour and influence his subordinates so they could what they ordinarily may not like to do, he must have a clear vision and his beliefs must be in tandem with what his subordinates feel, say, or do. More importantly, he needs to generate trust and sustain same through a balance in ambition, integrity and expertise.

Apart from these, here are seven other attitudes for effective managerial performance:

1. Vision

A good manager should be able to see beyond the present and know the right steps to take. A visionary manager should be able to shape the outcome of events and getting important goals achieved for the organization. This is so since the corporate and political culture of organizations are changing fast at the pace of innovations in technology around the world. A manager must be able to foster a shared vision and values which bring about people’s commitment towards the accomplishment of a common goals.

2.  Communication

Effective and efficient managerial communication helps to generate positive attitude from employees in any organization. This communication takes various directions – upward, downward, vertical and horizontal. Whichever direction communication takes, it should be effective. Once the line of communication breaks between the manager and his subordinates, effective performance from both ends would be difficult. 

3. Good Education and Training

A manager that wants to be effective in his line of duty should be sound and knowledgeable and have general knowledge of managerial principles. As a way of further developing his subordinates, a manager should encourage his subordinates to improve their skills, knowledge and competencies, expose themselves to new skills and ideas in their field by taking part in periodic training and development opportunities. Constant training opens individual subordinate to develop himself in line with global best practices and keep up with changes and trends in technology either within the organization itself or the society at large.

4. Helping Others to Grow  

An effective manager would always encourage his subordinates to grow by giving them room for self development through provision for on the job training and acquisition of new skills in their areas of specialization. Rather than watch his subordinates become redundant, he helps them to develop themselves to a degree to self actualize their dreams. This he can do through firmness, fairness and friendliness. When his subordinates are fully developed in their fields, the job of the manager is made easy and this would aid his effectiveness.

5. High Standard of Personal Ethics

Personal ethics are those attributes which a person must possess to qualify him for a leadership position. They include intelligence, commitment, dedication, self-assurance, vision, goal-driven, communication, integrity and education. An effective manager must have this and more. 

6. High Level of Willingness and Ethics

Enthusiasm, dedication, innovation, and inspiration – these elements show willingness and energy on the part of the manager. An effective manager in combining these will be able to attain the organisation’s objectives. 

7. Innovation and Creativity

A manager that wants to be effective should be highly innovative and creative. To be effective in the organization and remain valued by his subordinates, a manager should seek new ways and methods of achieving results rather than relying on the old and traditional methods of doing things.
