Although Asisat Oshoala and the Nigerian senior women football team might have been dissapointed with a round of sixteen finish in France, the pacy Barcelona based forward might find some consolation in being placed in the running for the recently released FIFA shortlist for ‘Goal of the Tournament.
Oshoala was shortlisted for her stunning goal, which contributed to the Super Falcons’ 2-0 win over South Korea — making Nigeria the first African country to win their second group game in the history of the competition.
She managed to hold on to a long pass in the 73rd minute, shrug of the South- Korean defender on her neck and then rounded the goalkeeper to slot home from a very tight angle.
It was a goal that showcased her trademark lightening speed to beat the defenders to the ball, and an amazing technique to manage to guide it into the net despite hitting it almost from the corner line. It was a very impressive finish, and so it is easy to see why FIFA deemed it sufficient to make the list.
She made the shortlist alongside nine other nominees.
