BE BOLD: 7 Sure Signs of a Confident Public Speaker

I often give speeches in front of many people and I’ve always wondered what the signs of a confident public speaker are. For some people, public speaking is a hard skill to grasp since not everyone is comfortable in front of a large or even small crowd. Public speaking can be stressful and nerve-wracking, but sometimes it’s a must. Here are a few sure signs of an effective and confident public speaker.
Sure Signs of a Confident Public Speaker

1. The speech isn’t a recital

For me, there’s nothing more boring than having to listen to a two-hour presentation during which the speaker simply recites what they’ve memorized in a mellow, monotone manner. If your speech is just a recital, you need to look for some ways to make your presentation more interesting. I usually change the intonation of my voice throughout my presentation. Many successful public speakers use this trick, and you can give it a try as well. Not only will you capture your audience, but you will also put a little bit of feeling into what you’re saying.

2. The voice is loud and clear

When we give a speech in front of a crowd, many of us tend to talk at the speed of light or murmur almost inaudibly. If you want to become a better public speaker, you need to get over your fear and learn to control your nervous behaviors. Pay attention to the speed of your talking and feel free to raise the volume! You may practice in front of a mirror or ask your family and friends to help you.

3. There are no ‘like’ and ‘um’

If you don’t use words such as ‘like’ and ‘um’ when giving a speech or presentation, you are an effective public speaker. If you use them, you should learn to avoid saying them. Sure, you don’t have to just memorize your speech, but you must be prepared. All successful public speakers practice their speeches well in advance. It’s also a good idea to remove all the filler words from your everyday conversations. This way, you won’t use any um’s when giving a speech.

4. Making eye contact

I have attended many presentations during which the speaker didn’t lift their head to look at their audience and connect. As an effective and confident public speaker, you should make sure that whatever you are saying stays with the audience. Plus, making eye contact helps captivate the audience. Again, you can ask your parent or friend to help you practice making eye contact. Practicing in front of a mirror won’t help.

5. Involving the crowd

Try to involve your audience in your presentation or speech, if you don’t want them to fall asleep. Throw in several questions here and there or try to add a few comments that everybody can relate to. This is one of the best ways to draw people into what you’re saying.

6. Using body language

Using body language is one of the most effective ways to make a formal presentation a more relaxed conversation. A successful public speaker usually moves around and is not afraid to use their hands to relay an idea. Making eye contact and using body language can make a great difference.

7. Being prepared

Being prepared is one of the most important steps to becoming a successful public speaker. Practice your speech a few times before presenting and make sure you dress appropriately. Also, you should prepare any needed materials since looking for something you need in front of your audience won’t give a good impression.

I believe public speaking is a wonderful skill to acquire in our life. Yes, it can be difficult, but with a little practice you can become a successful and confident public speaker. Remember, even the shyest person can become a confident public speaker. Believe in yourself and your skills and you will definitely reach success and boost your career. Are you a confident public speaker?
