Senator Dino Melaye, representing Kogi West at the National Assembly, has regained his freedom after being abducted, according to a tweet by him yesterday.
“I thank God once again for escaping another dangerous attack. I also thank Nigerians for their prayers and show of love. I spent 11 hours in the wilderness traumatised but God preserved me. God is the best and in whom only I trust. They will continue to try. We shall overcome!!! —Senator Dino Melaye (@dino_melaye) July 27, 2018.
Senator Ben Murray-Bruce and former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, tweeted the purported abduct on Thursday.
The senator had been scheduled to appear in a High Court Kogi State on Thursday to face a charge bordering on gun-running, but he was absent at the proceeding.
His counsel, Mr. Yemi Mohammed, who stood in for Mike Ozekhome (SAN) told the trial Magistrate, Suleyman Abdalah that he heard that Senator Melaye was attacked in Gwagwalada, Abuja, on Wednesday on his way home from the court.
Regardless, the Nigeria Police Force said on Thursday that it had not received any complaint or report in any of its divisions or stations throughout the Federal Capital Territory or any other state command about the reported abduct of Senator Melaye.
Police spokesman, Jimoh Moshood, said in a statement in Abuja that they had not received any report about the abduct but had commenced an investigation.
The statement said: “The attention of the Police was drawn to the report of the purported abduct of Senator Dino Melaye in some sections of the media. However, the Force has commenced an investigation into the purported abduct of Senator Dino Melaye.
“We wish to implore any of his family members, relatives or friends who witnessed the scene or have information about the purported abduct of the senator to report the incident at the nearest police station to assist the police in the investigation.”
