Oil was discovered in Nigeria in 1956 at Oloibiri
in the Niger Delta region after about half a century of exploration. 
However not all states in Nigeria are oil producing states,they are about 10 major oil producing states in Nigeria,this post contains the list of the top 10 oil producing states in Nigeria.

 —Currently Nigeria has about 37.2 billion barrels proven oil reserves,the current reserves is expected to last for up to 45 years if no new oil is discovered.
Nigeria is the the largest oil producer in Africa and the 11th largest in the world producing an average of 2.28 million barrels per day in 2006. 

The Oil industry accounts for about 14% of Nigeria’s economy. 

With all these facts stated,here are the main oil producing states in Nigeria with the Number of oil barrels produced per day. 

Top 10 Oil Producing States In Nigeria 2019

1. Akwa Ibom State – 504,000 barrels per day (1st Position)

The largest oil producing state in Nigeria is Akwa Ibom State accounting for 31.4% of the total oil produced daily in Nigeria.

Akwa Ibom State produces about 504,000 barrels per day,and currently is the leader of oil production states in Nigeria.

Akwa ibom is home to about five million people and the state capital is Uyo.

The city is considered to be one of the well designed cities in Nigeria.
Akwa ibom is also a coastal state as it shares boundaries with the Atlantic Ocean.

There are about  31 local governments in the state,the majority of the groups in the states are Ibibio, Annang and Oron.

Apart from crude oil,the state also has a bounty of other natural minerals like natural gas, salt, clay,coal, glass sand,limestone and giver nitrate.

2. Delta State – 346,000 bpd (2nd Position)

The capital of Delta is Asaba.

This state is the second largest oil producing state in Nigeria and accounts for about 21.56% of Nigeria’s total production.

The state has about 25 Local Government Areas and has a population of about 4.5 – 5 million people.

The main ethnic inhabitants of Delta state are the The Urhobos tribe,the Isokos and the Itsekiris. 

The state is also rich in other minerals like: rubber, timber, fine sand and clay.

3. Rivers State – 344,000 bpd (3rd Position)

Rivers state was the highest oil producing state in Nigeria before it was over taken by Delta state and Akwa Ibom state,however a lot of people still do not know this fact,as the capital Port harcourt is still referred to as the oil city.

 —Port harcourt also has two major seaports,the city produces about 21.43% of the total oil production in nigeria.

PH has a population of over 6million people and is one of the most populated Nigerian cities.

Main ethnic groups in this state includes: Ikwerre, Okrika, Upobo, Kalabari, Ubani Etc

4. Bayelsa State – 290,000 bpd (4th Position)

Bayelsa State was formerly a part of rivers state,and is one of the oil producing states in Nigeria.

Bayelsa has a large deposit of natural gas and crude oil.Its capital city is Yenagoa.

There are about 8 local government areas in the state.

The state contributes about 18.07% of oil production in Nigeria and also home to Oloibiri, the place where crude oil was first discovered in Nigeria in 1959.

Bayelsa is one of the least populated states in Nigeria with a population of just over 2 million people. 

The major ethnic groups in this area include the Ogbia, Nembe, Izon and Epie- Atissa.

5. Ondo State – 60,000 bpd (5th Position)

The Capital of Ondo state is Akure and it is the 5th oil producing state in the country.
The state accounts for about 3.74% in production.

Ondo state has a population of about 2.5 million people with 19 Local Government Areas.
Ondo state is also blessed with other natural resources like bitumen and tar sands.

6. Lagos – 40,000 bpd (6th Position)

Apart from being one of the biggest commercial cities in the world,Lagos state is also a producer of crude oil.

Lagos is the 6th largest oil producing city in Nigeria with about 40,000 bpd.

Lagos is also one of the fastest growing cities in Africa and has an abundance of Natural resources. 

7. Edo State – 33,000 bpd (7th Position)

Edo state is the 7th oil producing state in Nigeria and its capital city is Benin city.

 —Edo state contribute 2.06% of the total crude oil output in Nigeria.

There are about 3.5 million people living in Edo state.

Not only is the state rich in crude oil,it is also rich with natural resources, like granite, clay, iron ore, gold and fine sand. 

8. Imo State – 17,000 bpd (8th Position)

Imo State’s oil production accounts for about 1.06% of the total oil produced in Nigeria.

There are about 4.5 million people living in Imo State.
Imo state has 27 local government areas. 

The state is also rich in natural resources, like crude oil, zinc, limestone,natural gas and calcium. 

Currently there are over 163 oil wells located in the state. 

9. Abia State – 11,000 bpd (9th Position)

The capital of Abia state is umuahia,the state is home to about 3.5 million Nigerians. 

The state has about 17 Local Government Areas with a population of about 3.5 million people. 
Abia state accounts for 0.68% of oil produced daily in Nigeria.

10. Anambra State – 3,000 bpd (10th Position)

Anambra state has the capacity to produce over 55 000 barrels per day through the private Orient Petroleum Refinery that was launched in 2006.

However the state produces about 3,000 bpd.

Awka is the capital of Anambra State.
The state is also rich in natural gas, crude oil, bauxite, ceramic Etc
