How to Look Younger Than Your Age

How to look younger than your age

Most women want to look younger, and while plastic surgery is a viable option that is taken up by many, it’s not for everyone.

There are two ways in which your skin begins to show the signs of ageing. Firstly, there is such a thing as intrinsic ageing, which is totally natural. As we get older, biological processes in our skin occur, including less collage production, less elastin production, and a variety of hormonal changes. As such, your skin begins to lose its plumpness, and it develops wrinkles and sun spots.

As well as intrinsic ageing, there is also such a thing as extrinsic ageing. This is when environmental factors, such as free radicals, pollution and sunlight, affect the way we age – usually for the worse. There are certain habits, such as smoking and drinking alcohol, that speed up the ageing process, and these are all parts of extrinsic ageing.

If you’re worried about ageing too quickly, here are a few tips on how to look younger than your age without resorting to plastic surgery.

Quit Smoking

How many toxins do you think a cigarette contains? One or two? Maybe twenty?

The correct answer is around 40,000. It’s quite the number! And each of these harmful toxins is dropped into your skin cell’s DNA each time you have a smoke.

Studies carried out on identical twins have shown that routine smokers look around 10 years older than those who don’t smoke. The telltale signs are particularly emphatic around the eyes.

If you smoke but are finding it hard to quit, consulting your doctor for advice is a good idea.

Find Ways Of Reducing Stress

Another tip on how to look younger than your age is to find ways to reduce stress.

Chronic stress is defined as stress that lasts longer than a few weeks. And chronic stress has a particularly adverse effect on ageing. For example – grey hairs!

Stress causes your body to release more cortisol, the stress hormone which contributes to a faster ageing process. The more cortisol you have in your body, the less collagen you have. And collagen is essential for the production and maintenance of new and healthy skin cells.

Overproduction of cortisol also leads to your skin’s surface losing water, which in turn causes dryness and promotes the development of wrinkles.

Reducing stress, then, is a good idea if you want to keep looking younger. There are a few ways to do this; you could practice meditation and yoga, take more breaks at work, take a vacation, sleep more, or go for regular morning walks.

Not everyone likes to exercise, but if you don’t mind it, it’s well worth working out some more in order to combat the signs of ageing. You don’t have to become obsessed with going to the gym five times a week, but working out a few times per work holds so many keys to longer lasting youth.

Exercise promotes better circulation of oxygen and nutrients through your bloodstream.

Exercise boosts your posture, which almost instantly makes you look younger.

Exercise stops free radicals from doing too much damage to your skin cells.

And exercise is also a good way of reducing stress.

Eat Lots Of Protein

For a skin-friendly diet, you could do a lot worse than eat more fatty acids and protein, which you will find in foods such as eggs, seeds, nuts and salmon.

Your body needs essential fats and amino acids, which are found in protein. Quinoa is a particularly useful grain, as it’s a complete protein, which means that it contains all the essential amino acids.

If you subsist instead on a diet that is low in fat, you will be susceptible to a sagging, withdrawn complexion because your skin is starved of essential nutrients need to plump it up.

Lose Some Weight

According to Dr. Donna Casey:

“Weight comes off from the top down. Since weight sheds in the face first, this means that losing even five pounds will make you look younger.”

Many of us make it our new year’s resolution to lose weight. But if getting healthier just isn’t motivating you enough, perhaps the fact that you will look younger will do the trick.

Drink Less Alcohol

Everyone enjoys a glass of wine after work, as a well as a few cocktails with the girls at the weekend. But where do you draw the line? Alcohol might be fun when you’re young, but the more you drink of it as you get older, the greater the chance it’s going to speed up the ageing process.

One way in which alcohol visibly ages you is it creates thread veins on the surface of your skin. These commonly tend to appear on our nose and cheeks, but they also appear on the backs of hands. And these broken capillaries are not pretty.

To limit the amount of thread veins popping up, or to prevent them altogether, reducing your alcohol intake is the best place to start.

Try Intermittent Fasting

Another tip on how to look younger than your age without plastic surgery is to try intermittent fasting. There are two reasons why intermittent fasting can make you look younger.

Firstly, it boosts the production of your human growth hormone, which increases the amount of collagen in your body. And collagen is important for younger looking skin.

Secondly, this type of fasting encourages your cells to repair themselves faster, as well as grow new ones. To learn more about  intermittent fasting and its health benefits click here.

Have A Face Massage

Some women have an inside-out glow that suggests they’re super healthy. But the rest of us don’t have this. So how do you get it?

Thankfully, you don’t need to undergo plastic surgery to look positively glowing. Instead, all you need to do is have a facial massage.

Facial massages stimulate your skin, working your blood vessels, lymph drainage points and muscles in order to restore vibrancy to your weather-beaten skin.

The best time to carry out a facial massage is at night when you have a bit more time on your hands. You can normally get away with using a facial cleanser, but if you have very dry skin, try a few drops of rose hip oil, too. This oil reduces skin hyper pigmentation, as well as fine lines.
