Meet the 3 Nigerian Women Who Received an Oscar Membership Invitation for 2018

Over the week, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences popularly known as the OSCARS extended membership invitations to 928 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.
 Of the 928 members invited, 49% are female invitees with 38% being people of color. This was as a result of the efforts of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science to boost diversity.
This year’s group of invitees is the largest and most diverse in the Academy’s history, which signals Hollywood’s seriousness to address the #OscarSoWhite controversies.
Four Nigerians made it on the list and of these, 3 are women. These include Nigerian actress Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Nigerian-born British actress Wunmi Mosaku and film producer Ngozi Onwurah

1. Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde also known to her fans as ‘Omosexy,’ has appeared in more than 300 films and is one of Time Magazine’s 100 most influential people in the world.  Omotola was acknowledged by the Oscars for her films “Last Flight to Abuja” and “A Private Storm.” Since her Nollywood debut in 1995, Omotola has become one of Nollywood fans’ favorites across Africa and around the world.

2. Wunmi Mosaku

Wunmi Mosaku is a Nigerian-born British actress well known for her role in the fantasy movies “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Wunmi also won the 2017 BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Gloria Taylor in the TV film ‘Damilola, Our Loved Boy’.

3. Ngozi Onwurah

Ngozi Onwurah is a Nigerian-born British producer, director, and lecturer who won the Best Short Film- Melbourne Film Festival, Australia and Best Documentary- Montreal Film Festival, Canada for ‘The Body Beautiful’.
