Life is’nt always sweet. It comes in different shapes and sizes for different times. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala speaks of times when things were hard doing the work of her country.

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is Nigeria’s first female minister of finance and she served two terms in this capacity. She also served as the Managing Director of the World Bank.

In July 2017, Okonjo-Iweala was named an independent non-executive director at Standard Chartered Plc in the UK and she currently chairs the Board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and the African Risk Capacity.

Holding these positions come with its accolades but there are also moments of criticisms and other times when one’s life and family is at stake.

In a chat with her, Okonjo-Iweala talks about one of the most difficult times in her life when she was still the minister of finance.

She said,

It was a terrible thing for my family when my mother was kidnapped. My mother asked the kidnappers, “What did my child do?”

They said I didn’t pay oil marketers their money so they wanted to kill my mother. I can say it is one of the most difficult times of my life. I want the whole world to know that fighting corruption is not an easy thing. When you fight corruption, people that are corrupt fights back.

I want young people to know that there is hope for Nigeria. I have served seven years; I want other people to serve too. I am just enjoying my life now.
