Pascal Atuma, a Nigerian filmmaker, has won the Just for Laughs film competition.
Atuma’s film emerged first out of 654 films from the US and Canada that entered into the competition.
The winning film was selected through an online popularity vote by the number of likes on a film.
Speaking on the creation of ‘Sweet Revenge’, Atuma said: “I wanted a multicultural story that will be funny based on situations and close to the immigrant experience. I wanted a universal story.
“My itch to make world-class movies that will be funny and at the same educative of different cultures and people inspired me.”
As the winner, ‘Sweet Revenge’ will receive exclusive distribution and the creators will get long-term deals with Hart’s Laugh Out Loud company and Lionsgate.
Atuma told TheCable Lifestyle he and his team are heading for a meeting with Hart, the Lionsgate team, and the Just for Laughs team, to talk about the future.
The short film was written and directed by Pascal Atuma while Ola George served as co-producer. It stars Naomi Sundiata, Nelson Morris, Lou Daniels, Bebe Obi-Okoye, Wendy German and Razie Brown-Stone.
Atuma, speaking on the inner workings of Nollywood, recently told TheCable Lifestyle that the industry is controlled by pimps and one can’t be successful without being a “prostitute”.
