Asisat Oshoala, a Nigerian international striker, has decided to join new National Women’s Soccer League team Bay FC, the club announced on Thursday.
Oshoala, the six-time African Women’s Footballer of the Year, joins San Jose from Spanish club Barcelona.
The 29-year-old earned four Spanish league titles and two Champions Leagues with Barcelona, scoring 107 goals in 149 games.
The striker has played for Liverpool and Arsenal in England, as well as Dalian WFC in China, before heading to Spain.
She has represented Nigeria in three Women’s World Cup competitions and won three African Women’s Championship medals with her country.
“To have the opportunity to add a player of Asisat’s quality, experience and winning pedigree to our roster is an exciting and important day for the club and the NWSL,” said Lucy Rushton, the general manager of Bay FC.
“She brings a world-class mentality to the field, as well as the speed and technical ability to lead the line, while also allowing others around her to be creative and thrive in space. Asisat has a track record of scoring goals at the highest levels of international football, and she joins Bay FC to continue that tradition.
The California club was established in April of last year and will share a stadium with Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
