Nigeria dominated the shortlist for the 2023 CAF Women’s Awards, with Super Falcons’ Asisat Oshoala and goalie Chiamaka Nnadozie making the cut.
On Tuesday afternoon, the continent’s governing body announced the shortlist of nominees, which included the Super Falcons and their coach, Wandy Waldrum.
Oshoala, who plays with Barcelona Femeni, won the triple, including the Champions League, with the Spanish giants and is on the verge of being the CAF Women’s Player of the Year for the sixth time. She is the current holder, with her fifth gong breaking the record of compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha. She was also nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2023.
Other Nigerian nominees for Player of the Year include Nnadozie, Christy Ucheibe, Osinachi Ohale, Toni Payne, and Uchenna Kanu, in addition to Oshoala.
Goalkeeper Nnadozie was nominated for Women’s Goalkeeper of the Year, and Waldrum was nominated for Coach of the Year.
Other Nigerian nominees for Young Player of the Year included Deborah Abiodun, Esther Ajakaye, and Oluwatosin Demehin.
After a valiant performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and Australia, the Super Falcons are also in the running for Team of the Year.
Victor Osimhen was nominated in the male category earlier this year and is likely to become the first Nigerian to win the prize since 1999.
