Yoruba Among 9 Languages Added To Driver’s Permit Test In America

The Yoruba language has been added to the list of nine new languages offered by the Maryland Learner’s Permit Tests in the United States of America.

Maryland’s driver’s permit knowledge test and study materials, including Yoruba, will soon be available in nine additional languages, bringing the total for each to 17 languages.

According to CBS News, the tests and study guides are currently available in English, Spanish, French, Korean, traditional Chinese, and Vietnamese.

Yoruba, along with Tagalog, Amharic, Arabic, Russian, Urdu, Hindi, Farsi, Portuguese, and American Sign Language, will be available to drivers beginning in September.

Chrissy Nizer, an administrator with the Motor Vehicle Agency in Maryland, USA, gave the reasoning for the additions on Tuesday, August 26. She said that the languages were chosen based on US demographic data.

“Improving accessibility for the driver’s knowledge test and study materials is critical to serve Maryland’s linguistically diverse population.” Nizer said.
