Finidi George, a former Nigerian international, has been identified as a prospective candidate to fill the vacant role of Super Eagles manager.

However, it is unclear whether he will be able to take over the duty because the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has also shortlisted five other contenders for the position.

The Nigerian Super Eagles have been without a regular coach since Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro, who led the squad to second place at the 2023 AFCON competition, stepped down last month.

Though hundreds of interested candidates applied for the job, a high-ranking member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Technical Committee, which is in charge of narrowing down the list of applicants, has hinted that Finidi, who will lead the Super Eagles in their upcoming international friendly against Mali and Ghana this week, is one of the names already penciled in for the position.

The insider claimed that five more people are on the NFF list, but he declined to reveal their identities.

“There’s not much I can tell you right now, but the good news is that we’ve shortlisted six names for the NFF to choose from,” the official stated, according to The Nation.

“What I can tell you now is that Finidi is one of the six shortlisted names good enough to coach the Super Eagles,” he went on to say.

When asked about the others on the list, he replied, “No, wait for the NFF to reveal the names of the five others.”

However, Basic Sports in Nigeria (BSN Sports) claims that Amuneke has already been recommended by the NFF Technical Committee as the Super Eagles’ new manager, with Finidi serving as his assistant.

The outlet also said that veteran cadet trainer Manu Garba has been chosen to head the national U-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, for the second time.
