Davido has endorsed Asue Ighodalo, the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state.
On Sunday, the Afrobeats musician endorsed Ighodalo on his Instagram account.
Davido shared a ThisDay cover showcasing the governorship candidate.
In the caption, he wrote, “The next governor of my mother’s homeland”.
Veronica Adeleke, Davido’s late mother, was from Edo state.
Davido’s appointment came after his uncle, Osun state governor Ademola Adeleke, arrived in Benin.
Adeleke was reportedly part of a PDP governors group that attended a huge Ighodalo rally.
Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Etinosa Idemudia, and Charles Inojie are among the prominent figures who have publicly endorsed the governorship candidate.
Others include Aloy Chife, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and former Cross River governors Liyel Imoke and Donald Duke.
The Edo governorship elections will be held on September 21, 2024.
Godwin Obaseki, the state’s current governor, is nearing the end of his second and last tenure.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said that 17 political parties have offered candidates to succeed Obaseki.
Olumide Akpata is the Labour Party’s (LP) governorship candidate, while Monday Okpebholo represents the All Progressives Congress (APC).
