According to Spotify, ‘Champion Sound’ by Nigerian musician Davido is the most-streamed Amapiano song in Nigeria over the previous decade.
To commemorate Amapiano’s first decade, the streaming platform issued a statement on Friday that included some music statistics.
The company stated that the South African dance genre received its first 100 million streams in 2020, followed by 300 million in 2021.
Spotify reported that the genre received over 1.4 billion streams last year. It stated that Amapiano listenership in Nigeria surged by 181% between 2023 and 2024.
According to Spotify, Davido’s song ‘Champion Sound’ is the most-streamed Amapiano track in Nigeria.
The single, featuring Focalistic, a South African rapper, was released in November 2021.
Spotify also announced the launch of ‘A Decade of Amapiano’, a website dedicated to “supporting the growth of homegrown music genres” in Africa.
“This critical influence has led to the launch of, A Decade of Amapiano, a site looking at the past decade of Amapiano and its different key influences,” the statement reads.
“Complemented by an on-platform Amapiano destination with pivotal playlists and podcast for anyone wishing to learn more about the genre’s origins, sounds and future.”
