How Ed Sheeran Wrote Seven Songs in Four Hours After Wife’s Cancer Diagnosis

Ed Sheeran’s wife, Cherry Seaborn, claims the British singer wrote seven songs in four hours after she was diagnosed with cancer.

According to the Daily Mail UK, the couple discussed their difficulties in a new documentary named “The Sum Of It All.”

Seaborn was diagnosed with a tumor in February 2022, while she was six months pregnant with their second child.

“I got diagnosed with cancer at the start of the year, which was a massive shitter, but it made me massively reflect on our mortality,” she said.

“We had the diagnosis of the tumour and the next day Eds went down into the basement and wrote seven songs in four hours.

“Some people write a diary and get their emotions out through the pen and, for Eds, if something really intense happens, he’ll go and write a song.

“I was saying to Eds, I’d never have agreed to do anything like this before — never, ever, ever — but it made me think this whole year, if I died, what’s people’s perception of me?

“What am I going to leave behind? It genuinely wasn’t until this year when I was just like I might die.”

In the documentary, Sheeran was reportedly crying as he reflects on his fears that his wife might die.

The 32-year-old Grammy-winning singer said that period of his life was “horrible” but the music was his “therapy”.

During the same time, Sheeran was mourning his late friend — Jamal Edwards — and also facing a court battle after being accused of plagiarism over ‘Shape of You’, his hit song.

Sheeran also said his deepest thoughts from the situation inspired ‘Subtract’, his new album.

“Music has always been like therapy to me. It was a way to get my thoughts and feelings down as a kid, and it works. It really works,” he said.

“The moment you find the worst thing has happened to someone you truly love, you feel like you’re drowning and can’t get out from under it.

“Just from that situation, all these songs came out. It’s scary putting your deepest, darkest thoughts out into the world, but I think I’m super ready to just put Subtract out and move on from it emotionally.

“That was a horrible, horrible, horrible month. Life hasn’t moved on for me yet and I don’t think it will.”

Ed Sheeran and Cherry Seaborn tied the knot in 2019.

Their union is blessed with two children – Lyra Antarctica and Jupiter.

The heirs of Ed Townsend, co-writer of the late Gaye’s 1973 hit ‘Let’s Get It On,’ are suing the singer.

The case, originally filed in 2017, claimed “striking similarities” and “overt common elements” between Sheeran’s ‘Thinking Out Loud’ and the 1973 soul song.
