Nigerian politician Yusuf Sulaimon Lasun He is a member of Nigeria’s Federal House of Representatives (National Assembly) and a former Deputy Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives. He is a member of the Labour Party and represents Osun State’s Irepodun/Olurunda/Osogbo/Orolu Federal Constituency. In the 2022 Osun state governorship election, he was the Labour Party’s gubernatorial candidate.
Early Life and Education
Lasun Yusuf was born on October 4, 1960, to Mr. and Mrs. Lasun. He is from Ilobu in Osun State’s Irepodun Local Government Area. He started school at the Local Authority Primary School in Ilobu, Osun State. He attended Ansar-Ud-Deen Secondary School in Erin from 1973 to 1979 before transferring to Ifon/Erin Community High School in Ifon, all in Osun State.
Following his secondary school education, he was admitted to the University of Ibadan in Ibadan, Oyo State, where he majored in mechanical engineering and graduated with a Bachelor of Science. He is a chartered engineer and holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife.
Lasun Yusuf is a well-known grassroots politician in Osun State who is affectionately known as “The Homeboy” due to his grassroots qualities. He was previously the UPN youth leader of the Unity Party of Nigeria. He worked as the Alliance for Democracy’s state public relations officer, PRO, before and during Chief Bisi Akande’s administration. In 2004/2005, the then-governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, appointed him chairman of the Osun State Capital Territory Development Authority, OSCTDA, a legal entity tasked with facilitating the urban growth of Osogbo and neighboring towns.
He ran for and won the Irepodun/Olurunda/Osogbo/Orolu Federal Constituency election in the 7th National Assembly in 2011. In the run-up to the 2015 general elections in Nigeria, the Action Congress of Nigeria joined forces with the All Progressives Congress and other parties, and he won on their platform. He was appointed deputy chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Water Resources by then-Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. He was also a member of the Constitutional Review Committee.
Lasun switched parties from the All Progressive Congress to the People’s Democratic Party on September 15, 2018. Lasun later became a member of the Labour Party and was elected as the party’s governorship candidate. In 2022, he ran against Gboyega Oyetola and Ademola Adeleke for the governorship of Osun State, but lost.
When Speaker Yakubu Dogara was unable to attend or had to participate on the House floor, Lasun presided over the proceedings. In November 2015, Lasun led a delegation of House members to the 15th Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers Conference African Region in Accra, Ghana. He was the conference’s Deputy Chairperson. On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, he represented the Speaker at an investigative public hearing on the activities of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) held by the House Committee on Power at the National Assembly. He presided over the House during the second reading of a bill sponsored by the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, to legalize the establishment of the North East Development Commission.

His residence was attacked by gunmen at midnight, around 1 a.m., in the run-up to the Osun State governorship election. Mr Lasun, a former deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, was attacked at his home just hours after he took part in a governorship debate in Osogbo. He posted about the incident on social media. However, no one was injured, and the perpetrators remain unknown.
2022 Osun State Governorship Debate
Mr Lasun competed in the debate against Governor Gboyega Oyetola of the APC, Ademola Adeleke of the PDP, Oyegoke Omigbodun of the SDP, and Akin Ogunbiyi of the Accord Party. He blamed insecurity in the state and across Nigeria on the Constitution and campaigned alongside other candidates for the establishment of state police.
