Nigeria Draw Hosts Cote d’Ivoire For 2023 AFCON

Nigeria has been drawn in Group A of the 2023 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) against hosts Cote d’Ivoire.

On Thursday, the draw took place in the Parc Des Expositions in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.

Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea are also in the Super Eagles’ tournament group.

Nigeria was placed in Pot 2 prior to the draw event, which was attended by representatives from the participating teams, including African football superstars like as Mikel Obi, Taribo West, and Yaya Toure.

The Super Eagles fell to Guinea-Bissau in the qualification campaign for the competition but finished first in their group. They had also met them in the previous AFCON, which was hosted in Cameroon last year. Nigeria defeated them by a score of 0-2.

The three-time African champions were last faced by the host nation in South Africa. That was in 2013, when Nigeria defeated Egypt 2-1 in the quarter-finals on their way to winning the continental title.

Senegal is the defending winner of the competition, having defeated Egypt in Cameroon. It was their first championship since the competition began.

This is the draw for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON):

Group A

Ivory Coast (hosts), Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau

Group B

Egypt, Ghana, Cape Verde, Mozambique

Group C

Senegal (holders), Cameroon, Guinea, Gambia

Group D

Group E

Group F

All group winners and runners-up and the four highest-ranked third-placed teams qualify for the knockout stage.
