NYSC at 50: Buhari Grants 65 Ex-Corps Members Employment and Scholarships

On Thursday, 65 former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members received automatic employment in the federal civil service thanks to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The ex-corps members were also given scholarships by the president to continue their education at any university in the nation up to the doctoral degree level.

Buhari emphasized the many accomplishments of the program since its founding 50 years ago while speaking at the NYSC 50th anniversary honours award ceremony held at the State House Conference Center in Abuja.

According to the president, 52 of the 65 honorees got presidential honors awards, and the remaining 13 were ex-corps members with physical disabilities who had been recognized by the NYSC Hope Alive program.

Buhari also announced a cash prize of N250,000 for each of the top award winners and N200,000 for other award recipients.

He thereafter issued a directive to the head of the civil service of the federation, the federal civil service commission and the minister of education to ensure adherence to the employment offers and scholarships.

“The 65 former National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members we honoured in Abuja today, in commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the NYSC, will be awarded @NigeriaGov scholarships to study up to Doctorate degree level at any University of their choice within Nigeria,” he wrote via his Twitter page

“52 of them received Presidential Honours Awards, while 13 are physically challenged former members who have been recognized under the NYSC Hope Alive programme.

“All 65 will also receive cash prizes. We are grateful for their service, and their labour shall not be in vain.”

The NYSC scheme was set up in 1973 during the military regime of Yakubu Gowon to reconcile and rebuild the country after the civil war.
