Career
Professional Career
Ola Aina, who joined Chelsea at the age of just 11, made his youth team debut as a teenager in the 2012–13 season before going on to start both legs of the FA Youth Cup semifinal and final. Earlier in his youth career, he represented Chelsea at the under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels. Aina made his first-team debut against AFC Wimbledon on July 19, 2014, in a preseason friendly following Todd Kane’s injury.
Because he didn’t get many opportunities to play for the first team, Aina declined a new deal. On July 11, 2017, Chelsea announced that they have loaned Aina to Championship team Hull City. He made his debut on August 5, 2017, the first day of the season, against Aston Villa, and the game ended in a 1-1 draw. In the third round of the FA Cup on January 6, 2018, he scored the lone goal as his team overcame Blackburn Rovers 1-0.
Aina signed a new three-year contract with Chelsea and, on August 14, 2018, left to join Italian club Torino on a season-long loan. A few days later, he replaced fellow right-back Lorenzo De Silvestri, who was forced to leave the game after only 25 minutes due to injury, in Torino’s 0-1 loss to Roma at home on the opening day of the season. Aina scored his first goal for Torino against Udinese on February 2, 2019. For Torino, Aina made 30 Serie A appearances.
On June 11th, Aina chose to permanently quit Chelsea, and she reportedly paid £9 million to do so. Turin returned to playing regularly in the second season, appearing 37 times in all competitions.
Aina returned to the Premier League on September 11, 2020, when he signed a season-long loan with Fulham, with the possibility of a permanent contract. Aina scored his first goal for the team and in the Premier League on November 2 during a 2-0 victory over West Brom at home. He shot from outside the penalty area into the top-left corner. Later, the Premier League chose the goal as its monthly winner.
International Career
Aina has represented England at the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-20 levels. Aina committed his future to Nigeria in May 2017 and got a Nigerian passport in anticipation of moving from England to Nigeria. He received his first call-up to play for Nigeria that same month.
In May 2018, Ola was added to Nigeria’s 30-man World Cup roster. Later, he was reintegrated into the group and made a key contribution to the team’s qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Egypt. He took part in the opening match against Burundi and assisted in the game’s lone goal’s setup.
On December 25, 2021, Interim Coach Eguavoen announced his inclusion in the 28-Man Nigerian Team for the AFCON Nations Cup.
