EduRank, a leading provider of social media analytics in the education sector, has released its list of the top ten universities in Nigeria for 2024.
The organization’s website explains that the scores were based on research outputs, non-academic prominence, and alumni influence.
The top ten Nigerian universities are located in the southwest zone and are operated by the federal government.

1. University of Ibadan
The university was previously a college of the University of London, UK.
The college was founded in 1948 as University College Ibadan, part of the University of London.
The University of Ibadan (UI) is Nigeria’s oldest degree-awarding institution, having been independent since 1962.
2. University of Lagos
Founded in 1962, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) is a Lagos-based public research institution.
UNILAG, a first-generation university in Nigeria, is consistently regarded as one of the best in the country by major educational journals.
3. University of Nigeria
Nnamdi Azikiwe, Nigeria’s first president and an African icon, created the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) in 1960.
According to the institution, the university was founded to develop highly qualified men and women who will meet Nigeria’s labor needs.
4. Obafemi Awolowo University
Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) is a federally owned Nigerian institution.
It was founded in 1962 as The University of Ife. Obafemi Awolowo University was renamed in 1987 in honor of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, an accomplished jurist, nationalist, and politician who was a founding father of the university.
The institution is divided into 13 faculties that provide a variety of undergraduate courses.
5. University of Port Harcourt
The University of Port Harcourt was founded in 1975 as University College, Port Harcourt, and granted university status in 1977.
In 2015, Times Higher Education ranked the institution sixth in Africa and first in Nigeria.
6. Ahmadu Bello University
Ahmadu Bello institution (ABU) is a federal government research institution based in Zaria, Kaduna state.
It was established in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria.
7. Covenant University
Covenant institution (CU) is a private institution in Ota, Ogun State.
It is associated with Living Faith Church Worldwide and belongs to the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of African Universities, and the National Universities Commission.
8. University Of Ilorin
The University of Ilorin, popularly known as UNILORIN, is a federal government-owned institution in Kwara state, north central Nigeria.
In August 1975, the federal military administration issued a decree that founded UNILORIN.
9. University of Benin
The University of Benin (UNIBEN) was established in 1970.
It began as an Institute of Technology before becoming a full-fledged university and authorized by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on July 1, 1971.
On April 1, 1975, it became a federally owned university.
10. Federal University of Technology, Minna
FUT Minna specializes in technology education, providing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in a variety of subjects.
The university is believed to have core competency in the creation of vaccines and pharmaceuticals, and also small arms design in conjunction with the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
