Dr. Amos Dangut, Head of National Office, West African Certificate Examination, Nigeria, announced on Monday that 8,285 candidates had registered for the first series of Computer Based-West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination for Private Candidates, 2024.
Dangut announced at a press conference in Lagos on Monday that the examination will take place across Nigeria from Wednesday, January 31 to Saturday, February 17, 2024.
The council declared in a press statement in November 2023 that it will use a computer-based model to conduct WASSCE for private candidates.
Dangut stated the council was aware that the news of this innovation was originally met with some criticism, but that “this only served as fuel for the council to forge ahead on its course to conduct the CB-WASSCE.”
He noted that the council was encouraged by the response to the initiative, as indicated by the number of entries received thus far.
“As of today, Monday, January 29, 2024, 8,285 individuals from across the federation had enrolled for the exam.
“Out of this number, 3,949 are male, representing 47.66% while 4,336 are female, representing 52.3% of the total candidature,” he went on to say.
Dangut indicated that candidates would be tested in 19 disciplines, consisting of 26 papers in a hybrid format.
“Plans have thus been finalized for the first-ever computer-based examination, which will be delivered in hybrid form. The hybrid mode requires candidates to respond to objective or multiple choice questions that are displayed on the screen.
“The essay and practical questions will be rendered on-screen, likewise, but candidates will be required to give their responses using the answer booklets provided,” he added.
He encouraged candidates to visit WAEC’s e-learning portal for information that would illustrate the requirements for conducting the CB-WASSCE.
“We have scheduled the CB-WASSCE for private candidates in 2024.
“We have and will always work hand-in-hand with the Federal Ministry of Education, the various State Ministries of Education, the Nigeria Police Force, other security agencies and stakeholders, to deliver, as usual, a credible examination to the Nigerian child and the general public,” the minister said.
