The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has awarded scholarships to 12 students at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Akoka who are impoverished but talented.
The recipients are all undergraduates, including those with impairments, from all levels and following various fields of study.
Prof. Kayode Adebayo, Chairman of ASUU of the branch, said this on Tuesday in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune.
According to him, the scholarship award is a direction from ASUU’s national office to alleviate the financial burden of some destitute but outstanding students at the country’s public colleges.
He explained that every November 12 is set aside by ASUU nationals to recognize and celebrate ASUU members who have either made significant contributions or paid the ultimate sacrifice in the service of the union, and that the union always uses the occasion to equally distribute scholarship awards to two indigent students in various public universities.
He stated that this year’s Heroes Day was conducted at Kaduna State University, where two deserving students were presented the honor as a symbolic for the year.
“So, in line with the national directive, ASUU-UNILAG would award scholarships to two indigent students of UNILAG on behalf of the national secretariat, and on its own, in line with its congress resolution of October 13th, 2023, it would award an additional 10 students, making the awardees 12 altogether,” he clarified.
Adebayo, an architecture professor, stated that although each of the national prize recipients would earn N200,000, the ten others would each receive N100,000, for a total of N1.4 million.
He stated that the union chose the recipients based on their applications and interviews to ensure that they actually earned the honor.
He mentioned that they would all be honored during a ceremony on Thursday, November 23, at UNILAG.
