BREAKING: Ondo Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is Dead

Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the governor of Ondo State, has passed away, HowNG has learned.

The 67-year-old governor passed away early on Wednesday following a protracted illness.

HowNG was informed of the regrettable event by a high-ranking government official.

Before he passed away, Akeredolu, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), former NBA president, former Attorney General of Ondo State, served as governor for a second time.

In June, the governor’s ill condition required him to be airlifted overseas for treatment. After spending months abroad, he returned to Nigeria in September and settled in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.

Opposition parties and activists put Akeredolu under tremendous pressure to step down or transfer authority to his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in accordance with the 1999 constitution, as his health deteriorated.

Additionally, there was conflict between the governor’s supporters in the state House of Assembly and Aiyedatiwa, which led to President Bola Tinubu’s intervention.

When Aiyedatiwa left for Germany for a second medical vacation in December of 2023, the governor eventually gave him power.
