Coroner’s Inquest into Mohbad’s Death to Begin Sept 29

The Lagos state judiciary will on September 29 begin a coroner’s inquest to ascertain the cause of death of Mohbad.

The 27-year-old singer died on September 12 and was buried the next day.

The circumstances surrounding his death have stirred up controversies on social media.

Thousands of fans have also protested nationwide while demanding justice for the late singer.

Last week, Falana & Falana Chambers wrote the chief coroner at the high court in Ikeja, requesting an inquest to determine the cause of death.

“Given the needless death of Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, we are compelled to request a coroner’s inquest to be conducted into the cause of death of this young promising musician,” the firm wrote in a letter dated September 18.

But in a letter addressed to the law firm on Tuesday, Mojisola A. Dada, Lagos chief coroner, said the inquiry into Mohbad’s death will begin on Friday.

The inquest will take place at a magistrate court in Ikorodu.

The letter was signed by T.A. Shotobi, the magistrate who will preside over the hearing.

“I have the directives of the Chief Coroner Lagos State, Hon. Justice M.A Dada, to notify your good office of his Lordship’s order to convoke an inquest into the death of the late ILERIOLUWA OLADIMEJI ALOBA AKA MOHBAD,” the letter reads.

“In view of the letter from your office to the Chief Coroner over the tragic death which you stated occurred in Ikorodu Lagos State, in the circumstances which require the convocation of an inquest pursuant to the extant provisions of Ss. 14 & 15 of the Coroner’s System Law of Lagos State, Cap C15, Laws of Lagos State 2015.

“Your office is hereby notified that preliminary enquiries into the death of LATE ILERIOLUWA OLADIMEJI ALOBA AKA MOHBAD, by the undersigned coroner will commence on: Friday the 29th September, 2023.

“Venue: Magistrate Court 3, Candide-Johnson Courthouse, Ita-Elewa, Ikorodu, Lagos. Time: 12:00 noon. We solicit your kind assistance in ensuring the attendance of your office.”

On September 18, the Lagos police inaugurated a 13-man special investigation team to probe Mohbad’s death.

On September 21, the police exhumed Mohbad’s corpse for autopsy and are awaiting the results.

Idowu Owohunwa, the state commissioner of police, said the force would thoroughly examine every piece of information linked to Mohbad’s death.
