Early Life & Education
Dr. SID was born in Lagos State on May 1, 1980. He grew up in Lagos State but is originally from Delta State, which is located in Nigeria’s South-South region. Justus Esiri, his father, was a veteran Nollywood actor, and his mother, Omiete Esiri, is a fashion designer. He is the second of four children born to his parents. He finished secondary school at Nigerian Air Force Secondary School in Ikeja. Dr. SID continued his education by studying dentistry and dental surgery at the University of Ibadan. Throughout his school years, his love of entertainment was evident as he participated in plays, dance competitions, and concerts, winning various prizes along the way.
Career
Dr. SID’s overall career is based on music. He had wanted to be a musician since he was a child. Dr SID signed a choreography contract with Trybe Records, a new record label, in 1999. He worked as a backup dancer for Trybe Records for three years. Dr. SID got his chance to perform in 2002 when he joined Da Trybe and was given a spot on the song OYA, which was responsible for the Nigerian hip-hop revolution in 2002 with Sasha, 2-Shotz, Timi, DEL, and the Trybesmen. In 2003, he released his debut single, Don’t Stop, which spent eight weeks at the top of the MBI top ten. However, his music career had to be put on hold since he needed to take a year off to complete his university degree.
Dr. SID graduated from dental school in 2004. He moved to the United Kingdom and began working with artists such as Felix Duke, R70, D’prince, JJC & the 419 squads, and D’prince. When he returned to Nigeria, he worked at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital for a year before going to Adamawa State for his National Youth Service. While working in various dental offices, he combined dentistry and music.
In 2005, he began work on a studio album titled Prognosis. He received a nomination for Best New Act at the 2005 AMEN Awards. Dr. SID decided to give up his dental practice after three years and devote himself entirely to music. He signed with Don Jazzy’s Mo’ Hits Records and recorded the collaborative album Curriculum Vitae (CV) with the Mo’ Hits Allstars, which was released in December 2007. He appeared on seven of the album’s fifteen tracks, including Booty Call and Close to You.
Don Jazzy and Dr. SID started working on his debut solo studio album for Mo’ Hits Records. The first single from the album Turning Point, Something About You, was released in September 2009 and is currently climbing the African top-rated music charts. He also performed as a member of Mo’ Hits Allstars at the MTV Africa Music Awards in Kenya, alongside D’banj, Wande Coal, and Kenyan musician STL.
Dr. SID joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records after D’banj and Don Jazzy, the cofounders of Mo’ Hits Records, split up. In addition, three tracks from his upcoming album were included on Mavin Records’ Solar Plexus compilation album.
