Shallipopi, a Nigerian artist, has described how the music of US rapper Young Thug freed him from sadness.
Shallipopi recounted being depressed at one point in his life owing to financial restrictions and a lack of affection in a recent interview with Chinasa Anukam on the ‘Is This Seat Taken’ podcast.
He claimed that the music of Young Thug, whom he called his “best artiste,” and Dablixx Osha, the late Nigerian rapper, helped him get through his despair.
He went on to say that although he was depressed, he understood their lyrics better, which rescued him.
“I listen to Young Thug, he is like my best artiste. Not only Young Thug, you know Dablixx Osha? The artiste that died like two years ago? I would say they saved me from depression,” he said.
“Because there was a stage in my life when I was depressed, not because of love, o, no, because of love too. Everything was making me depressed. No love, no money… and, you know, you have to be in a certain situation to play a song to understand the lyrics of the song, so like they saved me from that depression stage of my life.”
Shallipopi rose to prominence after releasing his first track, “Elon Musk.”
Since his success, his songs have received great feedback.
Shallipopi said in August that he does not write his songs but instead records freestyles in the studio.
