Meghan Markle Cheers Nigerian Team as First from Africa to Pick Medal at Invictus Games

Nigeria became the first African country to compete in the Invictus Games, which were founded by Prince Harry in 2014 to commemorate wounded military personnel. This year’s event drew 500 people from 21 different countries. Invictus is a Latin term that means “undefeated” or “unconquerable” and is related with a poem often repeated by Nelson Mandela.

According to the BBC, the Nigerian squad not only made a showing at this year’s event, but they also established their mettle, stretching it to earn the adoration of the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle.

The Duchess was frequently seen with Nigerian fans cheering on their team to win. The Duchess recently announced that a recent genealogical test indicated that she is 43% Nigerian.

Peacemaker Azuegbulam, 27, of Nigeria, is one of the Nigerian team members who has etched his name in gold. He won a gold medal in powerlifting in the 69kg category. He stated that he is quite proud of his accomplishments in representing both his country and Africa, as well as the Nigerian military forces. He stated that he has received numerous congratulations from people all throughout the country, with many thanking him for providing joy and pride to those who backed him.

He noticed that people often dismiss those with disabilities, but he is grateful for the platform’s opportunity to demonstrate that ability can triumph over hardship. As a member of the Nigerian military, Azuegbulam was injured while battling Boko Haram. As a result of his life-altering injury, his leg was amputated. Invictus has given him back his self-esteem and confidence, he says, because he is the first African to win a medal in the event’s history.

The participation of Nigerians in this year’s event is due to the vital role of Derrick Cobbinah, a British Army veteran who advocates for former British soldiers in Ghana. Prince Harry recognized his efforts, culminating in a 10-member Nigerian team competing in the tournament. Cobbinah’s project began two years ago, with the intention of making Nigeria the first African country to compete.
