Nnamdi Innocent is a Nigerian powerlifter who competes in the Paralympics. At the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he competed for Nigeria in the men’s 72 kg event and won bronze. He failed to complete a successful lift in the men’s 72 kg competition at the Summer Paralympics in Tokyo in 2021.
Early Life and Education
Nnamdi Innocent was born in Lagos State, Nigeria, on September 30, 1980. He is actually from Nigeria’s southeastern region. He completed his primary and secondary education in Lagos State before enrolling at Benue State University in Makurdi to study Public Administration.
Career
Nnamdi started powerlifting in 2007 in Lagos State, Nigeria, before joining the Delta State Sports Commission Team. Nnamdi Innocent competed for Nigeria in the men’s 72 kg event and won bronze in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the 2016 Summer Paralympics. He also failed to lift successfully in the men’s 72 kg event at the Summer Paralympics in Tokyo, Japan, in 2021.
He won the gold medal in the men’s 72 kg category at the 2018 African Para Powerlifting Championships in Algiers, Algeria, and the bronze medal in the men’s 72 kg category at the 2019 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.
He had a successful outing at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, where he took home the bronze medal in the men’s lightweight competition.
Personal Life
Nnamdi got married in 2019 to a fellow athlete, who he regarded, alongside Iranian Para powerlifter Siamand Rahman, as his hero and influence in his career. He got his impairment while he was a child due to polio.
