Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike is Nyesom Wike’s full name. He is the current and sixth Governor of Rivers State, as well as a well-known Nigerian politician and lawyer. The People’s Democratic Party is his political party (PDP). He was the Executive Chairman of the Obio Akpor Local Government Area for two terms from 1999 to 2007. He was appointed Minister of State for Education on July 14, 2011. Wike was appointed Acting Minister of Education after Mrs. Ruqqayatu was removed, but resigned before the end of his term to run for Governor of Rivers State. Viola Onwuliri stepped in for him.
Early Life & Education
Wike was born on December 13th, 1963. He is from Ikwerre, Rumuepirikom in Rivers State’s Obio-Akpor. Wike attended Government Secondary School Eneka in Obiakpor, Rivers State, for his O’level exams before enrolling at Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT). He earned a Bachelor of Laws degree from RSUT before enrolling in law school in 1997. Wike also earned a Master of Arts in Political and Administrative Studies from RSUT.
After Wike’s education, He served briefly in a private law firm before he joined politics.
Wike began his political career in 1999 as the Executive Chairman of Rivers’ Obio Akpor Local Government Area, a position he held until 2007, after being re-elected in 2003. When he finished his term as LGA’s Executive Chairman in 2007, he was appointed as Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s chief of staff. During Governor Amaechi’s re-election campaign, he was also assigned as the general manager of the campaign team. In July 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him as Minister of State for Education, and he was promoted to Federal Minister of Education in September 2013. He resigned from his position as Federal Minister in order to run for governor of Rivers State in the 2015 gubernatorial elections.
The Rivers State Election Tribunal, based in Abuja, began hearings on Wike’s election on May 13, 2015. Dr. Dakuku Peterside of the APC had asked the tribunal to declare Nyesom Wike of the PDP the winner of the governorship election on April 11, 2015, citing irregularities and noncompliance with the Electoral Act.
Wike was opposed to the case being heard in Abuja, arguing that it should be heard in Port Harcourt. The then-President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachawa, rejected Wike’s arguments and ordered that the tribunal be held in Abuja for security reasons.
The Rivers State governorship election tribunal declared Wike’s election null and void on October 24, 2015. The election tribunal ordered a rerun of the Rivers State governorship election within 90 days of its decision. Wike stated that he intends to appeal the tribunal’s decision.
After a brief delay, INEC declared Nyesom Wike the winner of the Rivers State governorship election on Wednesday, April 3, 2019. Wike took the oath of office on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt, as he begins his second term. In his speech, he promised to prioritize Rivers state.
In line with his educational reform goals, Nyesom Wike declared public primary and secondary education to be free. On Monday, June 24, 2019, he made the announcement during a meeting at the government house in Port Harcourt. This was met with both criticism and praise, with the latter coming from parents as well as former state principals and headmasters. Wike announced free registration for state residents taking the annual JAMB exam in 2019 through the State Ministry of Education. During his second term as governor, he simultaneously began construction on three major flyovers in Port Harcourt. Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery all have flyovers.
Nyesom Wike is married to a lovely woman and has three children. Jordan, Joaquin, and Jazmyne are the children of Nyesom Wike and his wife, Eberechi Wike.
