Nyesom Wike Biography: Education, Career, Family, Awards, and Net Worth

Nyesom Wike’s full name is Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike. He is Rivers State’s current and sixth governor, as well as a well-known Nigerian politician and lawyer. His political party is the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). From 1999 until 2007, he served as the Executive Chairman of the Obio Akpor Local Government Area. On July 14, 2011, he was named Minister of State for Education. After Mrs. Ruqqayatu’s removal, Wike was appointed Acting Minister of Education, but resigned before the conclusion of his term to run for Governor of Rivers State. Viola Onwuliri took his place.

Early Life & Education

Wike was born on the 13th of December, 1963. He is from Ikwerre, Rumuepirikom in Obio-Akpor, Rivers State. Wike took his O’level exams at Government Secondary School Eneka in Obiakpor, Rivers State, before enrolling at Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUT). Before entering law school in 1997, he received a Bachelor of Laws degree from RSUT. RSUT also awarded Wike a Master of Arts in Political and Administrative Studies.


After Wike’s education, He served briefly in a private law firm before he joined politics.


Wike’s political career began in 1999 as the Executive Chairman of Rivers’ Obio Akpor Local Government Area, which he held until 2007, after being re-elected in 2003. He was appointed as Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s chief of staff after completing his time as LGA’s Executive Chairman in 2007. During Governor Amaechi’s re-election campaign, he also served as the campaign team’s general manager.

In July 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan named him as Minister of State for Education, and in September 2013, he was upgraded to Federal Minister of Education. In order to run for governor of Rivers State in the 2015 gubernatorial elections, he resigned from his job as Federal Minister.

On May 13, 2015, the Rivers State Election Tribunal in Abuja commenced hearings on Wike’s election. Dr. Dakuku Peterside of the APC had requested that the tribunal pronounce Nyesom Wike of the PDP the victor of the April 11, 2015 governorship election, citing anomalies and violation with the Electoral Act.

Wike was against the matter being heard in Abuja, stating that it should have been heard in Port Harcourt. Wike’s arguments were rejected by the then-President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachawa, who ruled that the tribunal be conducted in Abuja for security reasons.

On October 24, 2015, the Rivers State governorship election tribunal pronounced Wike’s election null and unlawful. Within 90 days of its verdict, the election tribunal ordered a rerun of the Rivers State governorship election. Wike has declared his intention to challenge the tribunal’s verdict.

On Wednesday, April 3, 2019, INEC pronounced Nyesom Wike the winner of the Rivers State governorship election after a brief wait. Wike took the oath of office on Wednesday, May 29, 2019, at Port Harcourt’s Yakubu Gowon Stadium, beginning his second term. He vowed to prioritize Rivers state in his speech.

Nyesom Wike declared free public primary and secondary education as part of his educational reform ambitions. He made the statement during a meeting at the government house in Port Harcourt on Monday, June 24, 2019. Wike declared that state citizens who take the annual JAMB exam in 2019 will be able to register for free through the State Ministry of Education. During his second stint as governor, he commenced construction on three major flyovers in Port Harcourt at the same time. Flyovers can be found in Garrison, Rumoukoro, and Artillery.

Personal Life

Nyesom Wike is married to a lovely woman and has three children. Jordan, Joaquin, and Jazmyne are the children of Nyesom Wike and his wife, Eberechi Wike.
