UK Universities Cut Staff Due to Declining Enrollment from Nigerians, Other International Students

Because of the substantial fall in enrollment by foreign students, especially Nigerians, no less than 15 universities in the United Kingdom have announced plans to lay off certain employees and even discontinue some courses.

University World News reported a significant fall in foreign student enrollment, notably at the postgraduate level.

The development is also linked to the UK government’s decision to reduce international students, as various advantages granted at that level have been pared down.

There are also fears that the high cost of living seen around the world will have a detrimental impact on the enrollment of foreign students in undergraduate programs.

Most universities, from the top Russell Group to mid-tier and Scottish institutions, are not immune to the current scenario.

Robert Gordon University (RGU) has implemented a voluntary severance arrangement in response to staff redundancy owing to financial challenges caused by a significant drop in international student enrollments as a result of post-Brexit immigration policy changes in the United Kingdom.

RGU highlighted rising costs and a significant loss in public funding as key factors.
