Zulu Adigwe, the renowned Nigerian actor best known for his performance in the 1986 sitcom ‘Basi and Company’, has died.
The national secretary of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Abubakar Yakubu, confirmed Adigwe’s death to HowNG on Wednesday.
Yakubu reported that the film star died on Tuesday. He said that his family has not revealed the cause of death.
“Yes, we received the news that he died yesterday. His family is yet to provide information about the cause of death,” he said.
Adigwe spent his early years in Enugu State. He eventually moved to Austria, where he finished his elementary and secondary school.
His passion in performing began at the age of seven. He had his first television debut in ‘Basi and Company’, where he played the principal character, Mr. B.
The ace actor also sang the series’ theme song, and an album named ‘Mr. B Makes His Millions’ was produced by Polygram Nigeria in 1990.
Adigwe was known for his paternal and regal roles in Nollywood films. He appeared in several films, including ‘Living Abroad’, ‘Checkmate’, ’45 Minutes’, and ‘City of Kings’.
In 2019, the actor portrayed Pascal Nworie in the Nollywood blockbuster ‘Living in Bondage: Breaking Free’.
Adigwe’s death came a few weeks after Junior Pope, the Nigerian actor, perished along with four other crew members in a boat disaster on the River Niger near Asaba, Delta state.
When the event occurred, the actor and crew were reportedly on their way to a filming site.
Since January 2024, Nollywood has lost more than eight performers, including Mr. Ibu, Amaechi Muonagor, and Sisi Quadri.
Others who died include Olofa Ina, Adejumoke Aderounmu, Saratu Gidado, and Ethel Ekpe.
