The 2023 Vic Rail Scholarship Award recipients were revealed by the Board of Directors today. Michelle Higgins gave them away at the Fairfield High School honors assembly on May 3.
In charge of teaching math at Fairfield High School was Rail. The main motivation behind establishing the scholarship fund in Rails’ honor in 1985 was his influence on his students. Michelle Higgins, the speaker, is a foundation director as well as a math instructor. She discussed how Rails affected her choice to teach.
The prize is presented each year to graduating seniors who want to major in mathematics or who are already doing so at their preferred college.
Bradley Warnell has won honors. Eric and Tammy Warnell of Fairfield are the parents of Bradley. Bradley intends to enroll at the University of Iowa in order to pursue a career as a physics teacher.
Richard Michael Alonso was given recognition. He is the son of Fairfield residents Beth and Ricardo Alonso. Richard wants to study computer technology and seek a career as a software engineer. He aspires to enroll at The University of Iowa.
The total amount awarded to both these students is $5,000 this year.
This is the 37th year that these awards have been given at Fairfield High School, starting the year after Mr. Rail retired from teaching in 1985. A total of $109,250.00 has been awarded. The funds awarded come from the interest on investments. There are 35 active donors to the Foundation.
A committee has been formed to locate and get past winners of the scholarship foundation involved and .anyone interested should contact The Vic Rail Foundation.
