Early Life

Hafsat Olaronke Abiola, a well-known human rights activist from Nigeria who is descended from MOK Abiola, was born on August 21, 1971, in Ikeja, Lagos State. Nigeria’s southwest includes the state of Lagos State. Hafsat is the eighth of his parents’ adult children. Hafsat Abiola is a university graduate who earned her First School Leaving Certificate and West African Examination Certificate from institutions in Lagos State. Hafsat received an honorary doctorate from Haverford College in addition to her degrees from Phillips Academy in Andover in 1992 and the prestigious Harvard College in 1996.

Parents

Olaronke Abiola is the daughter of Chief Moshood Abiola, the newly elected president of Nigeria who took office on June 12, 1993. Hafsat’s father, who passed away in custody in 1998, was imprisoned for treason after becoming the presidency under the dictator Gen. Sani Abacha. Hafsat Abiola’s mother is known by the name Alhaja Kudirat Abiola. She tragically passed away in 1996 while participating in a protest for her husband’s freedom.

Career

“Kudirat Initiative for Democracy (KIND),” a non-profit, non-governmental organization founded by Hafsat Abiola, aims to enhance civil society and advance democracy in Nigeria. She also founded the “China-Africa Bridge and China Africa Forum,” an organization that encourages mutually beneficial cross-cultural cooperation between China and Africa with a focus on women’s economic contributions.
