Who Was Peace Anyiam-Osigwe? 15 Quick Facts About The Late Award Winning Filmmaker

Nigerians were shocked to learn of the death of popular Nigerian filmmaker Peace Anyiam-Osigwe.

Anyiam Osigwe was said to have died on January 9 in a Lagos hospital after being in a coma since Saturday.

Here are some facts to know about her.

1. Peace Anyiam-Osigwe was born on March 30, 1969.

2. She is from the notable Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe family in Nkwerre, Imo State.

3.  She was the only girl in a family of eight children.

4. She published a magazine called Clicks at 16 in the UK.

5. She holds a BA in Law and political science from Oxford Brookes University.

6. She was a poet with three highly acclaimed books to her credit.

7. She directed the first music video of hip-hop sensation, P-Square, and also managed them at the early stage of their career.

8. She founded the globally recognized film awards,  Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2005. She stepped down as CEO  at the 10th edition.

9. She was selected as a TED Fellow in 2009 and serves as a jury member of various international film festivals, including Berlin Film Festival, ION International Film Festival, and Cines del Sur.

10. In 2015, she began the AfricaOne initiative to commemorate Africans in the entertainment industry.

11. She was a Trustee of the globally recognized Osigwe Anyiam-Osigwe Foundation.

12. Some of her awards include:

  • The Pan African Film Festival in Los Angeles (PAFF) Channel Visionary Award for her efforts in promoting African Culture through her internationally recognized African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
  • Overall winner in the film category by the Creative Entrepreneurs Association of Nigeria/British Council.
  • African Vision Award for Innovative Initiatives for African Cinema at the 60th edition of Cannes Film Festival.
  • African Film Pioneer Award at the African Film Festival,TAFF
  • Member of the Order of the Federal Republic by the Nigerian government

13. She separated from her ex-husband years back.

14. Her mother, Dorothy Chinyere Anyiam-Osigwe is a recipient of the Officer of the Order of the Niger honour by the then president, Olusegun Obasanjo.

15. Till her demise, she was the National President of The Association of Movie Producers.
