Early Life

Yemi Eberechi Alade, better known as Yemi Alade, is a Nigerian Afropop singer and songwriter who was born on March 13, 1989. Her father, James Alade, was a commissioner of police of Yoruba descent, and her mother is of Igbo descent. She was born in Abia but grew up in Ondo. Yemi is the fifth of her family’s seven children.

Education

She attended St. Saviour British Primary School and Victory Grammar School for her secondary in Lagos. She later further to the University of Lagos where she studied Geography.

Musical Career

Yemi Alade began her career as a member of the girl group Noty Spices before winning the Peak Talent Show in 2009.

Effyzzie Music Group signed Yemi Alade in 2012 and released her single “Ghen Ghen Love.” She later released another single, “Bamboo,” produced by Fliptyce, which became a wedding song. She followed up with “Johnny,” which was produced by Selebobo and became a hit and trend throughout Africa, as well as parts of America and Europe. On YouTube, the video received over 100 million views.

Yemi Alade debut studio album King of Queens was released on October 2, 2014, collaborated with producers such as Selebobo, Sizzle Pro, Shady Bizniz, Philkeyz, Young D, GospelOnDeBeatz, DIL, OJB Jezreel, Mr Chidoo, Fliptyce, EL Mcee and Beat Nation. She promoted the album by touring several Africa countries.

Her second studio album Mama Africa was released on March 25, 2016. Yemi said it would focus on the strengths and weaknesses of an African woman. The album combines elements of Afropop, highlife, R&B, coupé-décalé, hip-hop and pop. She collaborated with artists from West Africa, East Africa and South Africa and produced by GospelOnDeBeatz, DJ Coublon, Selebobo, Philkeyz, BeatsByEmzo, Masterkraft, Rotimi Keys and Mr. Chidoo. Collaborated artist are P-Square, Sarkodie, Sauti Sol, Flavour N’abania, Rotimi Keys, DJ Arafat and Selebobo.

Yemi’s third studio album Black Magic was released on December 15, 2017. Collaborated with Falz and Olamide produced by DJ Coublon, Vtek, Sarz, Krizbeatz, Young D, Sess, Fliptyce, IAmBeat, Philkeyz, 2Kriss and Echo. It was supported by the previously released singles “Knack Am”, “Single & Searching” and “Heart Robber”.

In July 2019, Alade became the first African female artist to reach one million subscribers on YouTube. Alade was featured on “Don’t Jealous Me”, a track from Beyoncé’s soundtrack album The Lion King: The Gift. She appeared on the track alongside Mr Eazi and Tekno.

In 2019, she released her fourth studio album, woman of steel featuring multiple award winner Angélique Kidjo, American rapper Rick Ross and Yoruba actress Funke Akindele.

Endorsement Deals

In September 2019, Yemi Alade signed a multi-year licensing agreement with Universal Music Africa (UMA) and UMG France. Yemi Alade’s exclusive worldwide record partner will be UMA, while UMG France will be the international rollout partner for all of her label releases.
