Career
Yung6ix was incredibly passionate about music from an early age. He engaged in rap battles and developed close to other teens who shared his interests throughout his secondary school years, which led to the formation of the hip-hop group G-Squad. The group soon began leading performances at several Delta State talent shows.
After completing high school, Onokohwomo relocated to Lagos to pursue a career in music. His stage moniker, Yung6ix, was inspired by his high school nickname, “6ixty”. A&R Gbemi Ereku heard his song “I’m an African,” and in 2009, he hired him to work for his 411 Entertainment Company. After relocating to Lagos, he kept on recording music. In 2010, after the release of his well-known “Oleku” cover on the internet, he began to receive media attention.
Later, he made “So Far Gone” from his Green Light Green mixtape, a single that also included P. Fizzy, available. The song was a freestyle to Wiz Khalifa’s song “This Plane.” In January 2011, Yung6ix released “Plenty Money,” another track from the mixtape, and soon after, a music video. The song made its official radio premiere in Nigeria on Beat 99.9 FM.
On April 2, 2011, 411 Entertainment and Storm Records established a joint venture. The career of musician Yung6ix was furthered by this partnership. On the song “Follow Me,” which is on his debut studio album, Wizkid and Yung6ix collaborated. After the song was published, a music video was made, directed by Bobby Boulders. The fourth track from Yung6ix’s Green Light Green album, “Oh My Gosh,” was made available in September 2011. The following year, it received nominations for “Best Rap Single” and “Lyricist on the Roll” at the Headies Awards.
Yung6ix’s debut full-length studio album, 6ix O Clock, was eventually released on 6 February 2014. The 16-track album features guest appearances from Phyno, Percy, Da L.E.S, M.I, Ice Prince, Yemi Alade, YQ, and Wizkid.
