BREAKING: EFCC Arrests Bobrisky Over ‘Naira Abuse’

Bobrisky, a social media personality, was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for allegedly abusing naira currency.

The self-proclaimed transsexual and crossdresser was apprehended on Wednesday night in Lagos.

Bobrisky was nabbed for reportedly spraying naira notes and mutilating cash, among other charges.

Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, a social media celebrity, has consistently made headlines for controversial reasons.

She claimed to be Nigeria’s first transgender and admitted to severing her genitals.

There have been calls for her arrest, the most recent following her contentious win in the ‘best dressed female’ category at a Nollywood event.

The police spokeswoman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, clarified that crossdressers cannot be arrested solely on physical appearance.

According to the police public relations officer (PPRO), a crossdresser can only be prosecuted if they are “into something else that is criminal and punishable under the law”.

In April 2022, the House of Representatives examined a bill to criminalize crossdressing in Nigeria.

The bill seeks to amend the Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act (SSMPA) by defining crossdressing as “the practice of wearing clothes typically worn by a person of the opposite sex.”

The proposed modification, on the other hand, said that the articles “shall not apply to crossdressing in the course of a stage play or any bona fide public entertainment”.

If approved into legislation, crossdressers might face up to six months in jail if they maintain their existing practice.

In 2020, Bobrisky announced that she chose crossdressing to make ends meet after 25 years as a male.

In September 2021, the social media personality discussed the benefits of being a “woman”.
